Even though the long awaited Avengers: Infinity War was just released last Thursday, fans have already moved on to the next, yet untitled, Avengers film.
The end of Infinity War left fans shocked, confused, mystified, and — mostly — a crying mess of absolute devastation. But of course, the sadness will be short lived, as pretty much every character who died will likely make a return one way or another.
The latest installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe felt more like a Part One than a complete story, given how nonsensical it would be for some of the characters that bit the dust to actually be dead. For one thing, a few future films have already been announced, including a Spiderman sequel and Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3. I’m sure the sequels for Doctor Strange and Black Panther are already in the works. My point is, they aren’t dead. Or if they are, they come back somehow.
Which really begs the question — what exactly will Avengers 4 be? Is it really a fourth installment of an Avengers film, or is it actually just the second half of the third installment? (And while we’re here on confusing Marvel math, is Civil War the third Captain America film or is more like an Avengers 2 1/2?) There were rumors swirling around early on that Infinity War was originally supposed to be split into 2 parts, but they decided against it in the end. And yet the film felt distinctly unfinished.
The untitled Avengers 4 cast list also includes many of the characters who were seemingly destroyed by Thanos’ death snap, and also a couple that weren’t featured in Infinity War at all (*cough* HAWKEYE *cough*).
The speculation is now that the fourth Avengers film will be called Avengers: Endgame, referencing a line from Doctor Strange to Tony Stark in Infinity War: “We’re in the endgame now.” I, personally, think this is a really great title and I hope it turns out to be what they use — HOWEVER, that kinda downplays the whole idea that Infinity War was what everything lead up to/came down to/10 years in the making/etc., whatever other marketing phrases they slapped on this film. But that’s really an essay for another time.
