We’re currently on week three of The Mindy Project’s mid-season hellatus & I am not coping well. I’ve already watched episodes 501 through 507 too many times to count, I type “Mindy” every time I mean to type “mind” & I calculated the exact number of seconds until the midseason premiere (roughly 6 million)!
To catch you up with everything that has gone down so far, but mostly to occupy the Mindy part of my brain, let’s do a mini recap of the first half of season 5.
The show came back this year after a rocky and controversial 4th season, which is a sentence I could’ve written between seasons 1 & 2, 2 & 3, and 3 & 4. At the end of season 4, Mindy & an engaged Danny hooked up in an elevator (she didn’t know about the engagement) and said “I love you.” Then, Mindy got home to find Jody had bought her the apartment above hers to declare his love.
Season 5 starts in exactly the same place, Mindy is having a hard time processing Jody’s enormous (creepy) gesture so she sends him home so she can think. She then heads to her kitchen where she finds an invitation to Danny’s wedding! She goes to his place to confront him and he promises he’ll call it off. When they reconnect towards the end of the episode, he says he needs her to be different and she says she needs that from him. They have a sweet moment of closure and goodbye, where they admit that they’re not good for each other and part ways. After a heart to heart with Beverly (!!!), Mindy also dumps Jody and sets off on a new journey, to date someone that fits and with whom there’s a spark, instead of just one of the available doctors in her neighbourhood.
Since she rejected Jody, Mindy needs to come up with twenty-five thousand dollars to buy the apartment from him (Leo can’t live in a closet forever). Meanwhile, the nurses have realized how terribly they’re treated and they all go on strike, organized by Mindy’s Pedeatrician’s nurse, Ben. Without nurses, everything is falling apart so when Leo has an ear infection and the ER is backed up, Ben sneaks away to help Mindy and they bond hella deep. He also gives her some great advice about doing whatever it takes for your kid, so she takes a job as the Deslauriers on-call midwife to make up that extra cash.
Mindy and Ben keep bonding because Leo keeps sticking things where they don’t belong and hurting himself in stupid ways. One day, Ben is like “dude, you’re a doctor, you can do this stuff, admit that you make me do these house-calls because you like me” and Mindy rambles on about some excuse but then he kisses her and it’s perfect. Jeremy is not handling the strike well, his hair is falling out and his Thatcher pearls are not doing their job. Poor thing ends up having a heart attack. At least he can rest for a while now. He sends Mindy in to the negotiations with the nurses but Mindy doesn’t want to screw Ben over so instead of being quiet she tells him about the doctors dire situation and tells him to hold out. YAY.
Finally, the nurses come back to work and are earning a living wage. The practice is doing well again and Jeremy needs to slow down post heart-attack, so they decide to hire Dr. Anna Ziev. This new female doctor is sort of everything Mindy thinks she is and they butt heads. The staff call her out on it and call her a misogynist but she (correctly) states that her attitude towards other women was developed and socialized through the patriarchy so it’s not entirely her fault. Also Mindy accidentally meets Ben’s daughter who is the coolest kid! Other notable things include a cameo by Nate Berkus (a friend of Anna’s) and Mindy going to New Jersey twice, once for a date and once to apologize for treating Ben like trash.
Just as Ben & Mindy are in a good healthy place, she meets his OTHER GIRLFRIEND! Smh! He says “technically” they never said they were exclusive but even Morgan knows that once you start falling back on technicalities, you know you’re wrong. To take the sting out of her heartbreak, Mindy goes out with Leland Breakfast, a dude from Marvel movies who is also Jeremy’s friend from school. They go to a party Jeremy threw for Leland together but he’s insufferable almost the entire time. Jody is still pining over Mindy so Anna slaps him and then kisses him so he can get back to being efficient at work. Ben then shows up to apologize to Mindy only to get punched by Leland. M&B work it out and everyone gathers around the piano and the camera pans out in my favourite end-shot of all time (shout out to Stassy)
The weekend of Danny’s wedding really snuck up on us, as it’s here. Annette & Dot take Leo for his ring-bearer duties and Ben offers to stay with Mindy but she insists he go & chaperon his daughters’ volleyball game. At night by herself, pictures of Danny from around the apartment start talking to her, and telling her she made a mistake by dumping him. She thinks she’s going crazy so she gets in her car and drives while singing the Les Mis soundtrack until she ends up in Concord. Morgan calls to tell her that Danny is wasted and might not go through with the wedding, add this to the fact that the Danny pictures won’t stop talking to her and you get Mindy driving to New York to wreck the nuptials. While she’s driving, Ben calls and tells her he loves her, making her second-guess Danny and turn back around. Later, while her mom is reading from her immigration journals, Mindy texts Ben that she loves him too. The B plot was all about Sonu’s acting career. She tried to flirt with some sleezy guy to get a part but the kids ruined it, instead Mindy encourages her to write her own one-woman show!
The midseason finale was also the ONE-HUNDREDTH episode of TMP! Mindy wants Ben to be more than a nurse after she runs into Jamie whose now broken up with Lucy but a successful novelist. She convinces him to do a Today Show segment about Flu season and he’s great at it but it’s not something he wants to do. Mindy keeps pushing, when they run into Casey she calls him a “television personality” and that really bugs him. They have a huge fight on the sidewalk, interrupted by Josh walking by with some woman he’s probably cheating on. Ben’s like omg you’ve dated literally everyone and I’m like boo Ben don’t slut shame. Then he says that it’s obvious Mindy doesn’t think he’s good enough got her and he turns it around to say that she’s actually not good enough for him. He walks away all dramatically while Mindy stands there, heartbroken.
Damn that’s a lot of stuff, and that was me sticking to the bullet points of the season. We know Ben will be back because Bryan Greenberg was on set in scenes and outfits that we haven’t seen yet. Other fun 5B facts are that Kimrie Lewis Davis is set to come on as Lindsay’s mom/Ben’s ex, Colette gets a girlfriend, Mindy & Anna wear matching pyjamas, and Ryan Hansen will play Mindy in an episode. Overall, this was a fantastic half of a season, I think 5B will be another one in which the show redeems itself.
