Chances are that if you’ve been on the internet, you’ve at least heard of the film Space Jam. If you haven’t watched the film, you’ve likely heard the theme song. 2021 is seeing the return of this iconic film in Space Jam: A New Legacy.

Space Jam: Trailers And News

Trailer 1 for Space Jam: A New Legacy

Two trailers have been released for the movie. The trailers show a blend of live-action, hand-drawn 2D animation and 3D CGI effects.

The premise of the film follows LeBron James and his youngest son, Dom. Rather than following in his father’s footsteps, Dom wants to be a video game developer rather than a basketball player. Dom is kidnapped, and LeBron James has to win a basketball match to save him. Fortunately, he doesn’t have to do it alone; a familiar cast of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and others come to help and build the ultimate basketball team. However, will the Tune Squad be able to win against the Goon Squad – a team of virtual avatars that resemble professional basketball players? Each with their own powers and abilities?

LeBron James isn’t the only big name in this feature film. There will be appearances from Don Cheadle, Sonequa Martin-Green, and even the star of the original Space Jam, Michael Jordon. The big names don’t end here. Some of the voice cast in Space Jam: A New Legacy include Jeff Bergman, Eric Bauza, and even Zendaya. This is only a small selection of the full cast that has been announced.

The film will also include guest appearances, references, and cameos in the film – all from franchises within Warner Bros. These include Hanna-Barbera films, such as The Flintstones, as well as Game of Thrones, Mad Max, Animaniacs, and The Lord of The Rings. There were other references to Batman, Harry Potter, and even some gestures to A Clockwork Orange. The film will seem to have a little bit of everything for everyone involved.

Why Now?

Plans to make a sequel to the original Space Jam were immediately from its original release in 1996. The plot was to follow Michael Jordan and the Looney Tunes fighting a new foe. Michael Jordan did not agree to star in another film, so it was canceled. There were discussions of other films, such as Spy Jam, involving Jackie Chan, Race Jam involving Jeff Gordon, Skate Jam involving Tony Hawk, and another featuring Tiger Woods. All were cancelled, and instead focus went to Looney Tunes: Back In Action.

Talks of a sequel to Space Jam resurfaced in 2014 that would star Lebron James. The sequel was officially confirmed in 2018 when The Springhill Co shared an image on Twitter.

The first full trailer for the film premiered in April, with many more announcements following. These included a second trailer, and an arcade beat ’em up style game, which follows LeBron James, Bugs Bunny, and Lola Bunny.
