Okay, so it’s more of a count up, but details, details. Since the announcement was made that Supernatural’s 15th season will be its last, I find myself feeling nostalgic. So, for the next 9 weeks I’ll be posting and writing about the five (in my opinion) best episodes of each season. This is by no means a definitive list, nor is it in any particular order, but I will fight anyone who tries to argue that these are not the best of a very long, very beautifully painful show.
Alright, season six has a lot of polarizing episodes, coupled with a new show runner, but I have the unpopular opinion of legit loving this season. I know opening a series that has been about two main characters for a while is hard, but shit, Supernatural gave us some great characters:
1.) Weekend at Bobby’s
Getting to see Bobby’s end of the cons and the hunt was a blast in and of itself, but to top it off we get Crowley! And Rufus! And Scotland (for a second)!
2.) Appointment in Samarra
Death becomes Dean and it’s rough. Dean tries to get Sam’s soul, a soulless Sam is ready to do anything to keep from getting his soul back, including killing Bobby. Death is one of my favorite characters in this show I love seeing him teach Dean a bit about the burden and responsibility he bears. Oh, and Sam’s souls is forced back and behind a wall. EEP!
3.) The French Mistake
Meta on top of meta on top of meta. I once saw this episode with zero context (I didn’t watch the show when season six aired) and it was like throwing glitter on my brain and then putting it in a blender. It’s hilarious and pokes fun at the show so well. My dad will still talk about this episode and giggle. It’s gold. I love it.
4.) My Heart Will Go On
Okay so I know this may not be a popular choice for a top five, but hear me out: I love it. That’s it. I’m a sucker for alternate timelines, seeing Ellen again makes me so happy, and it’s a friendly PSA about how to handle table saws, copiers, etc! Also do not piss off Fate, holy shit.
5.) The Man Who Would Be King
Told from Cas’ POV, this is probably one of my favorite episodes of the series. All the little things that didn’t quite add up all season, all the angst from Cas about lying to the brothers, and all the pain at the end when they realize his betrayal. Crowley being the only smart creature in the universe by not underestimating the “denim-wrapped nightmares.” Hell just being a line you constantly wait in?? Also Demon Bobby. I can’t. All of it. I want it all.
