Since the announcement was made that Supernatural’s 15th season will be its last, I find myself feeling nostalgic. So, for the next 13 weeks I’ll be posting and writing about the five (in my opinion) best episodes of each season. This is by no means a definitive list, nor is it in any particular order, but I will fight anyone who tries to argue that these are not the best of a very long, very beautifully painful show.
Last week I went through my personal five favorite episodes of season one, and when I tried to pick five from season two, I honestly couldn’t do it. I was surprised, since I don’t watch the second season as often as others, but I decided to add some honorable mentions this week, because we can never have too much of the Winchesters, amiright?
Season Two
1.) In My Time of Dying

I know I have said that this list isn’t in order and whatnot, but this is hands-down my favorite episode of season two. Dean dies and becomes a ghost, we get a glimpse of the “other side” and we meet Tess. Not to mention that John Winchester sells his soul and gives his life to the Yellow Eyed Demon to save his son. It’s heartbreaking, and frustrating, and Jeffery Dean Morgan dies so well.
2.)What is and What Should Never Be

You might be starting to notice that I’m a bit of a sucker for the angst. What is and What Should Never Be has Dean trapped by a Djinn and living a “perfect” life, except it’s not. Not really. Yes his mom is alive, and so is Jess, who is marrying Sam… but even in his dream life, Dean is still the screw up. He may have a finacee, but he and Sam don’t speak and he still considers himself a loser. It’s a glimpse into Dean’s self-worth, and when he wakes up, he’s angry and bereft.
3.) Heart

I mean, I warned you, right? Heart brings Sammy someone to love, and then rips her away when it’s found out that she’s a werewolf, forcing Sam to shoot her. The poor guys can’t get a break, and seeing him with Madison brings to mind his life previously with Jess. It’s a gut punch and when Dean offers to kill her for his baby brother, we all cried.
4.) Tall Tales

See? I love goofy episodes, too! Okay, even finding just one gif from this episode was damn near impossible, because there is so much hilarity and goodness packed into these 42minutes. We get Bobby being an exasperated foster dad, we get to see the petty rivalry that we recognize in every sibling relationship, even when there are lives on the line, and possibly most importantly… we’re introduced to The Trickster/Gabriel, who becomes such an intregal part of the show’s family and mythos.
5.) All Hell Breaks Loose 1&2

So technically this is two episodes, but holy shit I can’t pick so here we are. The two-part finale sees Sammy die, Dean sell his soul, and John Winchester saved from Hell… I mean come on. I know that the boys die every other day now, but imagine watching this live and seeing a lead die?? Sheesh.
Honorable Mentions: Houses of the Holy, Simon Said, No Exit, Croatoan, Nightshifter (that Renegade music sequence was *chef’s kiss*)
