Thankfully, finally, after a year of basking in the limelight and generally living their best lives everyone’s favorite 2 Dope Queens are back on HBO with season two of their four-part comedy series. In season two’s second episode, “Nostalgia,” we go back in time with Phoebe Robinson and Jessica Williams as far as middle school and get to know the girls they were back then.
First, let’s deal with the important issue: fashion. Jessica’s nostalgiawear includes a Stefani-inspired short red plaid dress with white combat boots that she calls “middle school inspo” and Phoebe’s is a Missy Elliotesque 80s two piece jacket and pants. The queens reminisce briefly about making mixed tapes from the radio, meeting up in chat rooms, and wide-bottomed pants that most of us tried to wear at some point in our young lives.
Nostalgia’s biggest moment came with the introduction of the night’s special guest who truly inspires waves of the feeling in Jess (and me!) in the form of Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe! I attended one of this season’s tapings at the legendary King’s Theater in Brooklyn live and it was not this one. Our episode was amazing! But, I missed him by one-three nights. My best friend and I agreed: Next year, we attend all four.

Jess’s OMG moment is both precious and relatable as a long-time fan of the HP series, and is fully realized when Daniel Radcliffe gives she and Phoebe some basic coaching on their wand-casting skills. We are reminded that part of Jess’s living her best life includes her role in the new Fantastic Beasts series and friendship with J.K. Rowling. Also, don’t ever let Daniel Radcliffe set up your Simms house.
The three comedians of the night included Marcella Arguello, Shalewa Sharpe, and Bowen Yang. Yang, a new SNL writer, describes why representation matters, Sharpe – the author of Stay Eating Cookies describes the evolution of her personal definition of soft pants, and Arguello who is an amazing 6′ 2″ pulls a great HPV joke and closes strong with a bit about Tupac. It was a strong second episode and I can’t wait for more!
