Unsurprisingly, the human being that Janet invented to be her rebound boyfriend is not working out as well as one would expect.
While Jason Mantzoukas is a delight and I will always want him to be on everything forever, his stint as Derek is a short one that will be remembered for ever, unless there’s another reboot at some point down the line.
He’s obsessed with her and follows her everywhere, which at first, she finds extremely adorable, they’re even already living together in Janet’s void. Michael wants to end this before Vicky or one of the other demons summon Janet and she shows up with that dork.
He heads off to Tahani & Jason’s mansion where he sends them off on a romantic weekend getaway in the woods on the edge of the neighbourhood, telling them to not at all ever call Janet because she’s still glitching. Then he heads off to Eleanor and Chidi’s place for an ethical way to murder someone. He ends up having to explain the whole Derek thing to them and sends them on an ethical spiral.
While they’re trying to decide what the ethical thing to do is (kill Derek? Tell Tahani than Jason was married to Janet? and other bad suggestions) but they can’t agree on anything. By now, something like 4 hours into their relationship, Janet and Derek are fighting every second and not getting along AT ALL. In fact Derek runs off into the neighbourhood to get away from her.
In happy couple land, after playing Cricket and a game involving a ball, glassware and some kind of bat, Jason PROPOSES TO TAHANI and she says YES! This is where they forget the rules and summon Janet, she makes them beautiful invitations but she gets extremely sad and risks glitching again. To prevent this, Michael, Eleanor, & Chidi crash the wedding, summon the robot lovebirds, and tell everyone everything.
T&J decide not to get married for now and to just enjoy each others company.
Eleanor has a sweet talk with Janet about relationships and heartbreak, offering her friendship services whenever Janet needs to talk about her feelings. Janet “reabsorbs” her boyfriends mind and soul and shoves him in a random corner of her void.
In the spirit of telling the truth, Eleanor sits down and finally shows Chidi the tape where they said I love you to each other. Both are shocked that they were able to say the word with such ease, and also uncomfortable around each other now. Both deny their romantic stylez feelings and say they don’t feel that way about each other now (mostly Chidi, he’s hella in denial.)
As if that wasn’t enough to deal with, SEAN SHOWS UP IN MICHAEL’S OFFICE! Probably wanting to see how everyone’s doing with the modern torture, and also maybe Vicki told him everything?
The Good Place returns with new episodes on December 28th, until then stick with us for all the latest gossip!
