That’s it it’s official, Mindy Lahiri is getting divorced BUT SHE’S TOTALLY FINE WITH IT YOU GUYS.
We start off with Mindy in Cliff’s office – going over the details of the divorce. In a very Dennis-esque (It’s Always Sunny joke look at me being all cross-show-y) move, he tells her a bunch of means things (not exactly unwarranted given she burned down the church at his grandmothers funeral while making out with Danny) and then says she is never to talk to Ben directly, always only through him.
Everyone is concerned for Mindy, who maintains that she’s totally fine because she has a great job, a great son, and Will & Grace is back and bitchier than ever, because she no longer has a husband and, as Tamra so brilliantly put it, that’s all she’s ever wanted. Mindy gets fed up with this pity party so she takes her gravestone shaped cake into her office and refuses to share with anyone.
While she’s tackling the cake, kind of slowly I might add, Peter shows up! Peter’s gross and I don’t know why we all love him so much – it might be that he’s exactly my type – but it is great to see Adam Pally back (#JusticeForHappyEndings). Peter wants to cheer Mindy up so he throws her a Karaoke Party and forces her to attend. Before the party, she learns that Ben is asking for half of everything in the divorce, which is a huge blow to her financially.
She’s doing the Mindy Sad On The Floor thing in her apartment when Lauren comes in and gives her pep-talk of sorts, after making sure she’s not dead. The pep talk is cut short when she uses Peter’s tracking device (not the GPS in his phone but a TRACKER in his THIGH!) and finds out he’s at Anna’s apartment.
Mindy reluctantly heads to the party despite wanting to lay on the floor forever (where. are. her. sour. straws?!). Beverly kicks it all off with “Get The Party Started” and this is a perfect opportunity for me to remind you that #BethGrantIsANationalTreasure. Colette then launches into more depressing music to commiserate with Mindy’s sad state. And then things start to get real and go down…
Tamra texts Morgan that she say a plus size female mannequin that made her think of him and invites him over – despite the fact that just the day before she was blaming their fling on the fertility hormones and calling it a mistake. Morgan obviously sprints towards this new opportunity with the love of his life. Peter full on bails on the party to be with Lauren, who we later find out actually punched Anna in the face because she thought Anna was hitting on Peter & when Anna gagged at the idea it really pissed Lauren off. Anna then comes to the karaoke bar and has a heart to heart with Mindy – she confesses that she had lunch with Peter to convince him to take her spot at the clinic but Mindy persuades her to not quit, and suck it up because awkwardness with any man should not define your life.
Dr. Z then gives Mindy some good advice about dealing with her divorce and encourages her to talk to Ben, to sort things out amicably between them. Mindy leaves her with “it’s much harder to break up with someone you’re in love with” totally referring to Danny and throwing poor Ben under the bus. Anna hears this and is moved to “make a gesture!” She kicks Karen off the stage (who deserved it for kicking Mindy off the stage earlier) and sings a love song for Jeremy, who is psyched his life is turning into A Star Is Born (his favourite movie ever). They make-out at the end of their song and hopefully get their happy ending – let’s be real, Jeremy deserved a win!
Mindy heads to the hospital to speak to Ben but instead sees Lindsay. We learn that Ben already has a new girlfriend now, and Mindy realizes that it doesn’t matter if Ben gets half her money, because then it would help him give Lindsay more opportunities so they bond and Mindy leaves without confronting Ben and decides to give him whatever he wants. The next day, Cliff informs her that Lindsay had a talk with her dad and set him straight so he’s backing down. AND THEN HE LETS IT SLIP THAT DANNY’S DIVORCE IS NOT GOING THIS WELL AT ALL. Mindy’s like “OMG DANNY’S GETTING DIVORCED” and then she smirks so obviously she still loves him and we’re headed towards reconciliation…
Do we want them back together? They were great in season 2 but then let’s be real Danny sorta sucked as time went on…has he changed now? WHAT WILL HAPPEN?! Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
The Mindy Project seems to be going for a more narrative driven approach this season, each episode feels very theatrical, with the right amount of focus on each character and a plot that follows a timeline that makes sense. It is shaping up to be a great final season & I am excited to see where we can go from here.
A new episode is now streaming on Hulu!
