Mindy’s back you guys! It’s the last time I get to write that sentence (probably) so I had to get it in there. The final season of The Mindy Project premiered last week on Hulu and it was a pretty great premiere. The whole thing was pretty cinematic, gave everyone room to play and tied in to the series premiere in a cool way.
The episode started out with a Mindy voice-over and a flashback to her life as a young Indian girl in sleepy town USA and her love of romantic comedies and obsession with marriage. Just like how in the premiere, we met young Mindy quoting the rom-coms back at her TV. Cut to present day when Ben is moving into her apartment and putting a picture of them in front of her The Princess Bride VHS tape while Rescue Me – the most rom-com song of all time – plays. Mindy and Ben have fallen into a little routine, we see them and their cute kids having breakfast, them brushing their teeth, and their eyes are sort of yelling the title of the episode out to us.
One morning, Mindy goes to SPIN CLASS instead of having breakfast with Ben who made her favourite food, a stack of something, in this case pancakes. Like, that’s weird! That’s not the Mindy Lahiri we know…although, she did run a mile once in season 1 and all the way up the Empire State Building in season 2, so maybe she’s an athlete at heart? Anyways, she heads to work and we reunite with our favourite weirdos.
Morgan fell out of the bottom bunk of his bunk bed and broke his neck, Karen works at the practice now and is still mad at Colette who wants her fired, Tamra wants to be a single mother by choice and Jeremy & Anna have now been together 8 MONTHS and are celebrating their anniversary by going to a lecture about 12th century embroidery. It’s also Jer’s anniversary as managing partner of the practice, for which he gets his favourite extra fibrous digestive cookies baked for him by Karen. Colette ends up getting Jody to fire Karen, but the place literally goes to the rats and Beverly gives Mindy one of her antipsychotics by accident so they make Colette call, apologize, and get her back.
Mindy is supposed to hang out with Ben that night but then Jeremy comes to her asking for advice and invites her out for drinks so she bumps her husband for her co-worker in a text! Jeremy wants to ask Anna to move in with him and he figures Mindy would have the most wise take. The advice is bad though because when he asks Anna, she says she has to make a pro-con list at first and ends up rejecting him after having a chat with Mindy about her lack of experience and wanting to see what’s out there. Mindy basically brags about her slutty feminist phase (girl has had at least 23 boyfriends in 6 seasons) by pulling out her heartbreak box, and ultimately influences Anna’s choice to date around.
So on night one, Ben gets dumped for Jeremy and on night 2 it’s Anna. On the 3rd day, Mindy goes to dinner with Tamra to discuss her fertility treatment and future baby names. Yes! Tamra Webb is going to be a mom! She comes to Mindy earlier in the episode and tells her the only thing she loves more than herself is a mini version of her so she wants to have a baby. Mindy sets her up with the whole package and the various shots she has to give herself but despite being a nurse and loving giving shots to everyone (especially racist little old ladies) she can’t do it to herself. Tam goes to The Lahiri Fertility Clinic’s injectables class taught by none other than Professor Morgan Tookers! He’s shocked that she’s doing this and totally still in love with her (duh) but he’s supportive and ends up giving her her first shot later as she’s freaking out because deep down he’s a caring dude probably. Yay for Tamra honestly, girl deserves to love her best life after being with RayRon for so many years.
On the fourth morning when Mindy wakes up, she starts talking to who she thinks is Ben next to her but when he doesn’t respond, she pokes at him and pulls off the covers, finally realizing that he was a pile of pillows the whole time and calls him in a panic. He is butt-hurt that she didn’t realize he was gone for TWO WHOLE DAYS but Mindy goes all the way to Jersey to apologize and they’re in love so all is forgiven for now, and he makes her promise to hang out with him that night. She explains that she’s been alone for so long she doesn’t know how to share her time, which is so something I relate to, but I feel like if I was Mrs. Namaki hyphen Ben’s Last Name If He Has One, I wouldn’t forget his hot ass. Mindy delivers a baby until late that night and goes to take a nap in the doctors lounge instead of heading home to her husband! Leaving him there with a lot of wine and time to feel neglected and get hella mad.
So we end this week with a heartbroken Jeremy and an oblivious Mindy not realizing that her marriage is probably falling apart around her. In happier news, Tamra is thriving in her fertility program and sticking to her shots, Morgan has TWO signatures on his cast now, Colette & Karen are friends, Karen has started diluting Jody’s whisky again hopefully curing his alcoholism, and Beverly had a good week, probably. A new episode of The Mindy Project is now streaming on Hulu!
