Every generation gets nostalgic about the shows they used to love and wishes they could get just one more season of their past fave. The only difference is nowadays you can take to Facebook or Twitter to talk about how much you miss it and connect with thousands more who feel the same. You can also head online or to one of the many streaming services and relive your fave episode.
This makes it easier to quantify just how many people miss a show and would watch it on TV again, which is what advertisers and network executives are mostly looking for when pitching new shows/reboots.
When the cast of Will & Grace got together during the 2016 election to make a video supporting Hillary and encouraging Jack to vote, the internet blew up with renewed talk of a revival. With the success of new Arrested Development episodes, Netflix’s Gilmore Girls 2.0, Twin Peaks, One Day At A Time and so on, bringing back W&G probably felt like a no-brainer!
I love a good sitcom and binge-watched W&G before binge watching was cool, when you had to go to the DVD rental place and you could only check out 6 DVD’s at a time so you were constantly begging someone to drive you for more episodes, so I am thrilled about this reboot news and I think the writing can be good and relevant, losing some of the stereotypical microaggression-y tones that existed in the aughts.
My ONE problem with this reboot is HOW?! In 2006, the final episode took us on a time travelling journey, Grace married and had a baby with Leo, Will was raising a son with Vince, and they were not speaking to each other. They only reconcile 20ish years later, when their kids meet in College and get married. Where does this revival come in? It’s been 11 years since the finale, so does that mean Will & Grace are not on speaking terms? Are Karen and Jack living off of Beverly Leslie’s fortune together with Rosario? Will Leo & Vince be on the show? Are we just going to pretend the series wasn’t wrapped up with a neat little bow?
All of my questions will probably be answered Thursdays this Fall, when NBC has scheduled Will & Grace to air. For now, let’s just be content with the fact that we know there’ll be at least one good show on TV next season. Check out the teaser trailer above and stay tuned to TGON for coverage of everything W&G, honey.
