The season starts where last season left off (Thank God! Can you imagine another time jump right now?). Owen and Amelia just got married, and everyone (who didn’t have their own drama going on elsewhere) is at the reception. In the finale, Meredith found out her half-sister, Maggie, likes Riggs, whom Meredith had started hooking up with. She decides to pull an Angelica Schuyler and choose her sister’s happiness over her own, but she gets interrupted by a phone call from Jo while trying to tell him that. We can’t be sure what Jo says over the phone, but Meredith knows DeLuca is in the hospital and it’s serious. Meredith and Webber go to Jo’s apartment, while Riggs and Maggie rush to the hospital.
DeLuca arrives at Grey-Sloan Memorial in an ambulance, accompanied by Karev. Karev, in doctor mode, ignores when people ask “what happened?” DeLuca, unable to talk, freaks out when he looks around and sees Karev, his attacker, as one of his doctors.
When Mer and Webber get to Jo’s, Jo is a sobbing, drunk mess. “He shouldn’t have come back here.” Meredith spots blood on the floor, and suspects Karev is the reason DeLuca is injured. Leaving Webber with Jo, Meredith goes to the hospital to confront Karev. Her suspicions are confirmed when she sees Karev’s hand all busted and bleeding. He tells her that he had walked in and saw DeLuca on top of Jo, thinking he was sexually assaulting her. She decides not to report him to the chief, Bailey, and tells him to say he hurt his hand by slipping in the rain. Maggie asks Mer how this happened to DeLuca, and Meredith tells her sister that she doesn’t know, leaving it at that and walking away.
With it being Owen’s wedding night and April just having an emergency c-section a few hours ago, Bailey leaves Ben in charge of Trauma, showing that he has earned back her trust.
Webber tries to be someone Jo can confide in. No one knows more than he does about making drunken mistakes and feeling like the world is ending. He promises her that her problems won’t feel so big after some sunshine and coffee. When he goes to start some coffee, Jo sneaks out.
On the way to visit DeLuca in the hospital, Maggie tells Riggs that the two of them had broken up. It was a nasty breakup, and DeLuca might not want to see her, but he’s ‘a person she was personal with’ and so she cares that he’s in such bad condition. Riggs didn’t realize the two of them had broken up, and when he says that, Maggie turns into a babbling idiot in front of her crush. Seeing DeLuca in his hospital bed, Maggie wonders if she made a mistake, letting DeLuca go, and if she should be with him instead of chasing after Riggs.
Catherine Avery, Jackson’s mom, meets her grandchild and learns that Harriet will have the hyphenated last Kepner-Avery.
Jo tries to tell Karev what was really happening earlier that night between her and DeLuca. She started off by saying that she was drunk and upset, and Karev jumped to the assumption that Jo hooked up with DeLuca to get back at him. Jo keeps trying to explain, but Karev won’t listen.
Stephanie finds Jo, who is ready to pack up everything, quit the program, and take off. Since Stephanie had been the one to leave her at the bar earlier with DeLuca, she asked Jo for the rest of the story. Jo clarified that she did not sleep with anyone and that he was just being good guy, getting her home safe and taking care of her. Stephanie relays this message to Meredith, who relays it to Karev. The whole thing was a misunderstanding, but “Whoops, sorry” doesn’t undo anything.
Webber catches Jo outside the hospital, about to take off. She tells him that she’s walking away from the mess she made because she can only make things worse. Webber knows that running away doesn’t fix anything, so he takes her bag and says that he won’t let her quit.
Before Karev had caught them together in the finale, Jo had told DeLuca the real reason she won’t accept Alex’s marriage proposal – she’s already married, and has been living under a false identity, hiding from her abusive husband. After DeLuca’s surgery, Jo goes to his room to ask him to not tell anyone about the secrets she had shared. Karev walks in to apologize, but, again, DeLuca freaks out at the sight of him.
“I have to do something that I don’t want to do.”
“Then don’t do it.”
“I have to.”
“Then do it.”
After finding out what really happened with DeLuca, Meredith can’t stand by and lie for Karev. She goes to Bailey’s office and tells her that Karev is the cause of DeLuca’s injuries.
Bailey calls for the police, who are already at the hospital, and tells them to not let Karev leave the building, but Karev is already turning himself in to the police on his own.
Maggie is angry at Meredith for lying to her. All day, Mer had pretended she didn’t have any information, and the whole time she had been protecting Karev and hiding it from her. Maggie has Meredith promise to never lie to her again. Half a second later, Riggs knocks on Meredith’s door. Meredith tells Riggs that they can’t do this relationship that they had started because someone (Maggie) is going to get hurt, and that she doesn’t feel the way Riggs thought she did. Meredith goes back in the house and Maggie asks who was at the door. Meredith (the world’s speediest promise-breaker) replies that someone needed directions.
Meredith visits Karev in jail, and they talk about how he might go to prison and lose his medical license.
“We’re grown ups. We can’t run. We have to face up to the stupid things we do.”
