Last we saw our friends in The Mindy Project land, Mindy was crying in her apartment and Danny was being a difficult grump. In “Will They Or Won’t They,” Kaling makes it clear that this is Mindy’s journey, and her story to tell. A different sort of montage brings us back into Mindy’s world, sets the tone for the episode and for the rest of the season.
The aforementioned montage shows Danny & Mindy trying to make it work, fighting in bed, going to therapy, Danny not showing up for therapy, Mindy dreading going home and finally her moving out, giving her clothes away FOR FREE, returning the ring and Danny quitting the practice. While her personal life is in shambles, we see Lahiri Fertility Clinic thriving with a packed waiting room and new babies on the Wall O’Fame.
The episode picks up as they’re preparing for “Later, Baby: Spring Break” where a bunch of college girls are coming to New York to have their eggs frozen and hang out with Mindy and see Hamilton. This is my dream trip btw, minus the egg part I want all of mine to rot and die. We meet these women who are pretty cool except for Chloe [pronounced Schloe in case you didn’t know] who calls Hamilton boring and clearly wants to hook up with Jody aka she sucks.
Before the show that night, Mindy goes to Danny’s to drop off Leo. Messina does a Donald Duck impression here that is impeccable and hilarious and I had to pause the show to laugh it out. Anyway, add a lasagna to the comedy and he convinces Mindy to stay and they hook up after they’ve put Leo to bed. THEY’RE BROKEN UP! SO THIS WILL NOT END WELL! I keep shouting at my Hulu but alas, they carry on.
The next morning, we find out that these girls are wild monsters who were even drunk before Alexander Hamilton proposed the financial system and ran around Manhattan cutting dogs off their leashes. side note if you haven’t listened to the Hamilton cast album yet go do that right now & thank me later. This is doubly awful because one of the dogs they set “free” was Seth Meyers’ dog Frisbee! Actual Seth (who looks a loooooot like that nameless architect Mindy dated in season 1 winkyface) makes an appearance behind his LNSM desk to plead with NYC to bring Frisbee back. #FrisbeeStrong
Mindy and Jody go to confront the girls who are just not having any of it. They’re rude to Mindy and say they want to be chaperoned by JKK instead. Mindy tries to make a cool exit and adorably ends up with her foot in the trashcan #onbrand. We next see her watching the news at home. Everyone is still worried about Frisbee, it’s gotten to the point where even Danny has heard about what happened to Seth’s dog. He’s texting her and invites her over for “eggplant emojo” which, to him, just means that he made eggplant parm; get your heads out of the gutter.
Jody & Jeremy have the girls on lockdown in the office, Morgan is outside complaining to the guy at the news stand and Chloe has made her way to Jody’s office and into his bourbon. Literally everything falls apart when Mindy isn’t around to inspire. Morgan decides that by finding Frisbee, he can be a hero and get back on Mindy’s good side. Mindy and Danny are making out, but she’s trying to talk to him about work. He’s meh on the listening thing so he just takes off his pants and they hook up again – set to more footage of me screaming that this is a bad idea. During this time, Morgan actually finds frisbee and returns to the office, to find Chloe with her shirt off pressed up against Jody (ew).
Cut back to Mindy and Danny, right as his refractory is over (oh baby) and she’s brushing her teeth, she finds some other woman’s lipstick in his bathroom. When she confronts him about it he’s like “I’m a guy, we have needs” which makes Mindy giggle and then he giggles and then they give us a glimmer of hope that this mess can be salvaged. So then Mindy leaves and is having feelings when Morgan calls, telling her that Chloe is actually gone/missing this time. Being the resourceful angel that she is, Mindy finds Chloe (not before Calvin Harris calls her a loser, apparently). She’s just hurt that she didn’t mean anything to Jody and Mindy’s advice is to make a clean break with the old chapter and maybe date some undergrads next time.
A week later, the girls are behaving and everything has ended smoothly. Jody mentions how great it was that the girls got to hang out with a strong role model, she thinks he means Beverly (also great) but he was actually referring to Mindy herself. With this new strength and determination in mind, she heads to Danny’s to break my heart to make a clean break with Danny so she can really move on with her life. He watches her walk away with sad puppy eyes which again gives me a glimmer of hope that by the end of all this, these two crazy kids can make it work.
The episodes end tag features a clip of Morgan on LNSM, falling backwards while he’s still in the interview chair, but Mindy doesn’t stick around to watch the clip because there’s a breakfast calzone in the kitchen that she has to tend to.
I really loved everything about this episode, it felt like the Mindy of yesteryear, when it was funnier and sassier and less focused on Danny – I’m super hopeful for what the next 12 episodes will bring! As always, #TeamMindy until I die.
