This week, fans of the Scarlet Speedster were finally blasted through the breach into the wild world of Earth2, in Barry and Cisco’s attempt to save Jessie Quick from Zoom. There are two plotlines that need to be covered this week, and both were emotionally charged and full of shocking developments.
On Earth1, Joe, Caitlin, and Jay are left behind to safeguard Central City. The team does a reasonable job until the entrance of Geomancer, a Meta with literal Earth-shattering abilities. In Barry’s absence, the team has to improvise with Garrick as a stand-in speedster, using Velocity 7 (a new Speedforce enhancement drug developed by everyone’s favourite bioengineer). Garrick makes a shocking revelation about his previous experiences with Velocity 6; apparently stopping Zoom will not cure him, despite what Jay has been telling Caitlin. As a viewer, this begs the question; Does Jay care about Caitlin? Evidently not, if he was prepared to feed her lies and give her false hope about curing him, if fans thought Jay was shady before, his case just got a lot worse.
Meanwhile, on Earth2, Barry poses as his slightly-better-looking-doppelganger as part of a reconnaissance mission to find information about Zoom. Barry’s journey as Earth2 Barry is full of heart-wrenching and hilarious moments, but overall it demonstrates his idealized life; he has the woman of his dreams, and the family unit he grew up without. Yet the writers have glossed over the idea of Barry being tempted to stay and live out his perfect life on Earth2, something that will hopefully be addressed next week. When crisis strikes, however. Barry makes the questionable decision to temporarily abandon his rescue mission and stay with Iris2 and Joe2, with whom he has very…different relationships with. Seriously, Earth2 character dynamics are wack, hard to watch, and totally contrast everything we’ve ever known. That’s what makes it fantastically entertaining to watch.
Also on Earth2, we are introduced to Killer Frost and Deathstorm (evil Firestorm) for the first time; validating fan theories that Earth1 Caitlin is too genuine to be an evil ice Meta. She and Ronnie2 are minions of Zoom, along with another prominent Team Flash doppelganger, together they try to eliminate the “Breachers” from Earth1, and offer some funny-in-that-twisted-way one-liners. These guys are pretty entertaining villains. Overall, this week’s episode was amazing, and sets the show up for so many possibilities within the realm of Earth2.
