Round one. Fight.

The live action Street Fighter movie hits theaters this Friday, October 16, and it felt like the perfect week to give fighting games the spotlight. This genre has always been about one thing: you, an opponent, and the decision to keep stepping forward even when the odds look rough. Nobody wins every match. The players worth admiring are the ones who hit the button for the next round anyway.

Five fighters, five franchises, and one shared attitude for your Monday. Select your character.

1. “If you go into the ring expecting to fail, you will. Believe in yourself!” — Ryu, Super Street Fighter IV

Ryu is the heart of Street Fighter, a wandering fighter who cares far less about trophies than about getting better. Across the series his lines keep coming back to the same idea: training and belief matter more than any single win or loss. This one from Super Street Fighter IV puts it plainly.

Walk into this week expecting to win, or at least expecting to learn something. Your mindset gets to the arena before you do, so make sure it is carrying the right equipment.

2. “Get over here!” — Scorpion, Mortal Kombat

Scorpion fires his spear, yanks the opponent straight toward him, and announces it to the whole arena. It is one of the most recognizable catchphrases in gaming history, and it works because it is not a request. He is not waiting for the fight to come to him.

That is the energy for the week ahead. The email you have been avoiding, the project that keeps sliding down the list, the conversation you keep putting off: stop waiting for it to come to you. Throw the spear and pull it in.

3. “Show me your moves!” — Captain Falcon, Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Captain Falcon is an F-Zero racer who crashed the Smash Bros. roster and immediately became a fan favorite, and this taunt is pure confidence. He is not worried about what the other fighter brings. He is inviting it.

Whatever Monday throws at you, meet it with that kind of curiosity instead of dread. Bring it on. You have handled every other week that tried to show you its moves, and you are still standing.

4. “Come and get some, I dare you!” — Marshall Law, Tekken 7

Marshall Law is the Tekken series’ Bruce Lee inspired martial artist, all quick feet and zero fear. This line is a straight up dare, delivered with the calm of someone who has trained for exactly this moment.

Preparation is what turns nerves into confidence. You have put in more work than you give yourself credit for. Walk into your week like Law walks into the ring: loose, ready, and daring it to try you.

5. “Heaven or Hell, Let’s Rock!” — The Announcer, Guilty Gear

Guilty Gear opens its matches with this call, and it has become one of the most loved lines in the genre. It is loud, it is dramatic, and it asks only one thing of everyone on screen: commit.

That is the whole assignment for Monday. There is no point in easing in halfway when you can start at full volume. Pick your lane, commit to it, and let’s rock.
