South America S29 Ep 2 Review
Well, that certainly threw me for a loop. When I saw that South America was going to be going after billionaire weenies who like building data centers, I thought the show was going to bash all those dumb, polluting, energy-hogging data centers going up everywhere. Instead, they went after a mildly easier target: know-it-all billionaire weenies.
Kenny is still dead?
Before we get started, it should be noted that there is a major change in South America. Note how the boys’ classroom is missing Kenny McCormick. That means that he is still dead after his e-bike exploded under sketchy circumstances. That means that Matt and Trey plan on having his death stick for a while. This isn’t the first time they did this. In the penultimate episode of the show’s fifth season, they tried killing Kenny off for good because they got tired of the joke. But the show wasn’t the same without him, so they just wrote him back in like nothing happened at the end of the next season. It looks as though Kenny will be staying dead for the time being! I’m not too worried, though. He always comes back! Besides, this episode is wholly Butters-focused.
Butters is angry because a bunch of “billionaire weenies” built a data center right in his backyard, and it’s cutting off the power to his house. That means he can’t watch his comfort show, the morbid Dr. Pimple Popper, on YouTube, and no one is taking him seriously. Especially not his parents, who are either obsessed with AI or convinced his measles vaccination has scrambled his brain. What do we expect, though? It’s Mr. And Mrs. Stotch. They’re near the top of my list of parents that deserve to get thrown in prison!
So no data centers, but billionaire weenies?
Going into this episode, I thought that we were going to be seeing the data centers that are ruining communities get satirized. Instead, the show opted to go after something else: the billionaires. Specifically, the new wave of billionaires who have earned their money in their lifetime. Which, as the show seems to think, makes them think that they are entitled to share their opinion when no one is asking for it. Oh, and in true South American fashion, they’re represented as being actual body parts.
I’m gonna be honest: the whole billionaire weenies thing felt like the weakest part of the episode. Don’t get me wrong: it’s fun watching the rich get made fun of, especially when they are making more money than they actually need. And to its credit, the show does point out the difference between older billionaires, who may simply show off their wealth in a hedonistic life, and the younger generation who thinks being rich automatically makes them cool or knowledgeable. In reality, it doesn’t, and the leader of the Weenies is frustrated at the bad publicity it gets them. Still, it wasn’t as interesting as showing how data centers are wrecking things for everyone. In addition, Matt and Trey are ones to talk, since they are either billionaires or close to that level.
Then again, at least Matt and Trey are funny.
I want more angry Butters
The big highlight of the episode for me was getting to see Butters angry. It’s rare that we see the kid ever get angry, especially when it’s justifiable. However, I think the best part was seeing the stupidity of his parents. Not only do they not take him seriously, but they think that this is because he got his vaccines. It gets to the point where they are convinced he’s dead or “libt****” and trans***” even where he’s right in front of them. I swear, if they were real parents, Butters would have been taken into foster care years ago!
In the end, the old Weenies and Butters make a deal: the Weenies will move out if Butters gets rid of the pretentious new Weenies. He captures them all and dumps them in Nashville where they can’t bother him anymore. Happy ending for everyone!
I think the takeaway here is that there is a certain kind of rich folk that is better than others. If I had to choose between the billionaires who just flaunt their money and the ones who share unwanted opinions, I’d pick the former. Hopefully, things will get better in November, because that’s when GTA VI comes out. When that happens, the country won’t care about its problems for a while. I’m really hoping that South America ends with something satirizing the game, by the way.
I Give “Billionaire Weenietown” a 3.5/5
