Netflix is the most popular streaming service in the western world, offering thousands of unique movies and TV shows to subscribers. As animated formats of entertainment are becoming more popular in the west, it is good to know that Netflix has a massive library of animated series and movies.
A couple disclaimers before the list. 1) While this list draws from popularity data based on online polls, it is a subjective list based on series I have heard of and/or watched. 2) This list will cover the top 10 animated series that are exclusively on Netflix and are entertaining for both children and adults. For example, One Piece is a great animated series and is on Netflix but will not be mentioned on this list because it is not exclusive to Netflix. 3) This list will be in descending order from the 10th most popular to the most popular.
10. Record of Ragnarok – The god have declared war on humanity for their many sins against the gods and each other, however, instead of demolishing all of humanity, the gods set up a series of 10 duels that humans must win six of to save themselves. The most outlandish, strong, and clever humans are chosen from the past and present to represent humans against the gods in these do-or-die duels. This series currently has 20 episodes, two seasons with an expected third season coming.
9. Onmyoji – A servant and a noble team up in service of their emperor to solve mysteries throughout the inner palace. From spiritual issues to demons, the duo overcome otherworldly obstacles to uncover an overarching enemy that threatens the stability of their empire. This is a 13-episode, one season series.
8. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners – Based on the game Cyberpunk 2077 and set in a distant future where tech has taken over everything, this series follows group of underground tech junkies as they try to fight back against a system that has oppressed them and millions of other like them. As the series progresses, the group begins to fall apart as tragedy strikes and an unexpected love story blossom. This is a 10-episode, one season series.
7. The Way of the Househusband – A mafia boss retires from the mafia to support his wife and daughter as a stay-at-home dad. From cooking to cleaning and much more, this former mafia man handles all the tasks he needs to do with a touch of mafia finesse. This comedic series has 20-episode, 2 season series with potential for a third season.
6. Pluto – Countries around the world start an arms race in the pursuit of creating the perfect AI robot, with a total of eight near-perfect robots being created. The one closest to being perfect suddenly malfunctions and its actions pushes to world to the brink of war. This is an eight-episode, one season series.
5. BoJack Horseman – This animated sitcom follows a horse-human that was once the star of a 90s comedy with a plethora of issues. The crude, hilarious style of animation and writing brings this horseman and his issues to life as he tries to earn back his fame and dignity. This is a 72-episode, six season series.
4. Kotarou Lives Alone – Forced to live alone, the four-year-old boy befriends his new neighbors and navigates the adult world as he overcomes his fears from his past traumas. Covering issues like domestic violence, child neglect, and more, this series beautifully and tactfully shows the signs of these issues in the real world, as well as how to help. This is 10 episodes, one season series with the potential for a second season.
3. Violet Evergarden – Set soon after a world war, Violet Evergarden, a former child soldier, is thrusted into a war-less world and must learn to live as a civilian after losing both her arms. Slowly learning to be civilian, Violet begins a career as a letter writer while struggling to understand her own emotions and coping with the loss of the only one who helped her try to understand them. This 13-episode, one season series also has as a special 14th standalone episode and two movies.
2. Delicious in Dungeon – While exploring a dungeon in hopes of hitting it big, a group of failing adventures are left stranded within a dungeon with very little supplies. This group must survive, heavily focusing on how they cook and eat with no supplies, so that they can navigate their way out or find the treasure they were looking for in the first place. This 24-episode, season one series has season two on the way and was rated one of the best Anime of 2024.
1. Arcane – Based on the lore of League of Legends, Arcane is set in the contrasting cities of Piltover, a bustling hub for technology, and Zaun, a struggling city stricken with corruption and drugs. To survive, a group of children from Zaun sneak into Piltover to steal stuff worth selling but stumble upon a technology with the power to change the entire world. This 18-episode, two season series is completed, but three more League of Legends animated series are expected in the coming year due to the record breaking success of Arcane.
‘Arcane’ is a masterpiece, and ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ is excellent. Netflix really does a great job of bringing unique animated series, both for kids and adults. All of these series have strong storylines and beautiful animation!
Arcane deserves the number one spot with its gripping storyline, stunning visuals, and incredible emotional depth!
