Hi everyone. As promised in my article telling you about the wonderful library service that is Kindle Unlimited, I am reviewing the books I read on there. Today’s book, Shadow City: Silver Wolf, I am covering actually ended up being a trilogy. The three books felt more like the whole story as opposed to three separate books. The three books are Broken Mate, Rising Darkness, and Silver Moon.

Sterlyn Knight is the story’s main character, and she is a wolf shifter, specifically a silver wolf. Silver wolves are the ultimate protectors and are very much tied to the moon. They are thought to be extinct. Sterlyn and her pack must stay hidden, or they will be hunted and killed. Sterlyn is beautiful with silver hair and silver/violet eyes. When I say silver, I don’t mean gray, though the silver wolves generally have varying shades of gray for hair. Her hair was as close to silver as hair can get. She is tall in human form, probably to hold all that strength.

We also meet Killian, Griffin, Sierra, and Rosemary. This, with Sterlyn, makes up the main cast of people. Killian, Griffin, and Sierra are all regular wolves. Killian is the alpha of the Shadow Ridge wolves, of which Sierra is a member, and Griffin is the alpha of Shadow City. More on that later. Rosemary is an angel. Dick (yep, that’s his name, and it is dead on), who is Griffin’s beta, and Dick’s daughter Luna are main characters too though neither person is particularly liked.

We open to a massive tragedy befalling Sterlyn’s pack, which causes her to flee in order to survive. Soon, Sterlyn is found by Killian and is safe for the moment. Killian offers his help. She is going to be exclusive with him. In exchange, she has a place to stay, and he helps her get a job. In a measure to protect herself, Sterlyn starts going by the name of Dove. On her first day on the job, she meets Griffin and Luna. Although, in Luna’s head, they are together, Griffin has zero interest in her, as apparent by Griffin’s excitement after laying eyes on Sterlyn. She meets Rosemary that morning too.

It soon becomes apparent that the people who attacked Sterlyn’s pack are still after her. Backed by her circle of friends who have quickly become family, she must fight back. However, Sterlyn isn’t all about her own problems. She wants to help where she can and to unite the supernatural races rather than each remaining separated in their own groups.

Overall I liked the books. I was excited when I should be, and I was never bored. Each person was their own person and had their own characteristics. Their voices all seemed similar, but it wasn’t too bad. There are enough differences in some of the characters that you don’t necessarily notice right away. There is loads of action, violence, and a lot of blood. There isn’t a gratuitous amount. But enough, if you don’t like much blood, you may not like this. There is some spice. It isn’t spicy, spicy, but more so that, say, a Harlequin novel but way less than Laurell K. Hamilton. There isn’t anything too kinky that happens, either.

I liked all the characters for the most part. The two things I really had a problem with are they were so agreeable, and Sterlyn was too good everywhere. Sterlyn was raised strong and with battle knowledge. Not only how to fight with her body and weapons but how to fight strategically. I love it. She is a kick-ass character who I wish I could be more like, but she has the answer for everything. However, she doesn’t do more than a little freak-out, and what she goes through deserves a massive freak-out or a series of smaller ones. Both Killian and Griffin love ferociously and are loyal to a fault. Both have survived the death of their parents and family but are putting off taking up the alpha duties of their pack until they get through college. But they give in to Sterlyn with very little convincing or take turns convincing the other why they should do what Sterlyn says. Sierra just goes along with everything though I do love her sass. Also, as I said, the story flows from one book to the next when it feels more like one book broken into three parts.

So, yeah, if you are like me and on a shifter, fated mate kick, this scratches that itch. There are other titles by Jen L. Grey, and some of them are in the Shadow City Series. Don’t worry, I will be reviewing them too. Have you read these? Or have you read anything else from Jen L. Grey? Let me know in the comments below. Until next time, have fun storming the castle!
