While video games are steadily growing in popularity throughout the Middle East, the number of titles set in the region itself isn’t that large. That being said, there are still some pretty good games set in the area that are worth playing. Carry on reading to see what some of our favorites are.

Kicking off our list is a video game that’s quite minimalistic. Released in 2012, it’s an indie title that’s playable on iOS, Windows, and PlayStation 3 and 4. The premise is simple: you’re a mysterious robed figure traveling across a vast desert, heading to a distant mountain. Along the way, you can encounter other players but there’s no regular communication; instead of using text or speech, musical chimes are used. The game was designed to make the player feel small and have them develop strong, emotional connections with the other players they meet on their journey.

Though Journey doesn’t contain any explicit references to the Middle East, its setting is clearly inspired by the region. It’s been lauded by critics thanks to its art direction, soundtrack, and general design and has won a string of awards.

The Prince of Persia

Next up is a series of video games that are set in historical Persia. The Prince of Persia series consists of well over a dozen titles, including several main installments along with reboots and spin-offs. The games have you play as the titular Prince as he fights with evil rulers and wizards and tries to save a princess in the process.

The games fall under the cinematic platformer and action-adventure categories. They’ve been released on a range of platforms and have been developed by many different companies. The very first installment was released in 1989 and the latest, a remake of The Sands of Time (2003) is in development. The series has been quite successful and has even spawned the film Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, though this is considered separate from the video games’ continuity.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Released in 2015, this is the fifth main installment in the Metal Gear Solid franchise and the ninth overall. It’s a stealth game that follows mercenary Venom Snake as he exacts revenge on those who destroyed his forces and almost killed him in the previous game. It has two main settings: the Angola-Zaire border during the Angolan Civil War and a Soviet-occupied Afghanistan during the Soviet-Afghan War.

It’s not just video games that are set in the Middle East; some casino games are too. Online slots come in a broad range of themes from outer space and historical characters to fantasy worlds and real-life countries. Assassin’s Creed Origins

The Assassin’s Creed video game franchise is one of the biggest in the world. Its twelve main series titles and twelve spin-offs have collectively sold over 200 million copies to date. The series’ story is about a long-running struggle between the Assassins and the Templars. The former seeks peace and free will while the latter wants control and order. The games are set in a wide variety of time periods and places.

Assassin’s Creed Origins is the tenth main installment in the series and was released in 2017. It’s one of many video games whose setting is ancient Egypt, with most of the action taking place from 49-43 BC. Developers consulted Egyptologists to make sure everything was authentic. Post-release, the game received several updates: two story expansions and the Discovery Mode. With the Discovery Mode, all combat is removed and players can learn about the culture and history of ancient Egypt.
