The last adventure-type game I have played lately was Sackboy: A Big Adventure. However, after defeating the evil guy with my husband, I was in the market for a single-player adventure. In addition, I was hoping to find something with a strong female lead and cute companions. I found just that in Kena: Bridge of Spirits.

The Story

Kena: Bridge of Spirits follows the journey of Kena, a young spirit guide. In this world, the spirits of the dead can remain in a limbo state if they feel their work is unfinished. As a spirit guide, Kena’s job is to help them move on from this realm. She is also an excellent listener, and with the help of her adorable companions called the Rot, she completes the tasks the spirits left undone. While Kena’s goal is to reach the sacred Mountain Shrine, she travels around helping those in need. During her travels, she came across a vengeful masked spirit who is corrupting the land and the spirits who inhabit it. This, of course, creates vicious monsters that she must destroy to restore balance to the land.

Thoughts

When I first saw the trailer for Kena: Bridge of Spirits, I knew I had to get it. The graphics are stunning, and I wanted to learn more about Kena as a character. I am not going to lie; this game is a tearjerker. There were multiple occasions in which I found myself sniffling and needing a tissue. However, it is not sad just for the sake of being sad. The story is beautifully told, and I felt connected to the spirits Kena needed to help. In addition, the gameplay mechanics were fluid and easy to handle. Every choice that went into this title was purposeful and exceeded my expectations. Do not even get me started on the Rot pals. They are adorable and bring some happy relief. Plus, as you progress through the game, they get even more badass. However, they are not there just to be cute little balls of sunshine and help Kena achieve her goals. Overall, I had a fantastic time playing this title, and I think anyone looking for a new action-adventure title should give it a shot.

Odds and Ends

If you want to be a super cool spirit guide with sweet, helpful friends, this is the game for you! You can play it on PlayStation 4 and 5 or PC. In the end, I cannot praise this title enough and urge you to try it out for yourself.
