Marvel has revealed the first trailer for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, introducing a new action hero to its theatrical MCU.

Shang-Chi, played by Kim’s Convenience star Simu Liu, is a renowned martial arts expert in the comics. Marvel fans will recall that Shang-Chi isn’t the only martial artist who’s gotten screen time – Iron Fist had its Netflix run, albeit riddled with poor choreography and always-tiring white savior undertones. It seems that the diverse cast and larger budget for Shang-Chi will make up for what Iron Fist lacked.

Simu Liu has been vocal about his excitement to portray Shang-Chi and was the first to show off the first poster for the film. Fans have been equally as excited to not only see a Chinese superhero on screen but also to see Liu taking up that mantle. But who wouldn’t be, right?

The Ten Rings organization has been floating around aloofly through most of the MCU to date — its first introduction was in Iron Man back in 2008. Shang-Chi now gets further into the organization as battles it and its leader, the Mandarin. It’s been a long time coming, but more story about the Ten Rings is finally here, and with a star-studded cast to boot.

Unlike other recent films, including Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will debut only in theaters rather than a simul-release with Disney+. The film hits theaters on Sept. 3, 2021.
