What Got You Into Cosplay?
I think it’s something I always wanted to do. it stemmed from wanting to be a Superhero and a model when I was little. But I didn’t have the courage to Cosplay until after I went to San Diego Comic-Con in 2012 and seen how fun it was, and how confident everyone was in their costumes.
What Is Your Favorite Cosplay You’ve Done So Far?
My favorite cosplay so far is this Splicer. I loved going to an abandoned theater/mall and acting spooky/insane for the photos. I got a lot of creative control over the shoot as well!
What Are The Main Factors in Choosing a Cosplay for You?
I like to pick the character that I connect with in one way or another, or games/movies I have the most fun with and enjoy. I also like to choose the character based on how challenging the cosplay is going to be. Also, I can’t sew very well to be honest, so bonus points if I can buy pieces of the costume at thrift stores.
Current Favorite Cosplay Breakdown
The Splicer costume took @craig_o_spades and me 48 hours to finish! We went to a local party shop and found the mask first which inspired us to do a psycho splicer type cosplay from Bioshock. I already had the dress from Goodwill that we tore and cut up. The hooks took the longest. We made them from Eva foam, heat-treated them, and used Mod Podge to seal them. Then we painted them with rust red, rose gold to give it an old rusty look and barn red for blood. I spent the ride from Lincoln to Hastings (about an hour and a half) doing my makeup, creating the cuts and bruises. On-site we added extra blood.
What Is Your Occupation Outside Of Cosplay?
I work for a medical software company in the electronic support department, and I do graphic design on the side!
Why Do YOU (personally) Continue To Cosplay?
I think it’s a great hobby to have. I am constantly learning new things about sewing, painting, and prop making. I also love having a goal to achieve, like getting a cosplay done before a con.
What Is Your Favorite Convention To Cosplay At?
I’ve only Cosplayed at a couple of conventions, but my first cosplay at O Con Expo will always hold a special place in my heart.
How Much Time Do You Spend On Your Cosplay Per Week/Month?
This honestly depends on how much I want to procrastinate. The Splicer Cosplay here only took about 48 hours to finish because I wanted to do a photoshoot that weekend. However, my Claire Redfield (from Resident Evil) and Negen (from The Walking Dead) costume took a couple of weeks.
Best Cosplay Experience You’ve Had
Last year I went to Planet Comicon with my sisters (in-laws) who all cosplayed for the first time! The night before we worked on the finishing touches for our cosplays. And the next morning we did our makeup, donned our costumes, and headed to the con! It was a blast and the most fun I’ve ever had at a con.
Best Advice You Have For New Cosplayers.
You don’t need to know how to make your own costumes to be a great cosplay. I believe for a long long time that I needed to know how to sew and do it perfectly the first time in order to be considered a good cosplay. But that’s not true at all, finding the perfect costume in a bag at a Halloween store, or pieces from a thrift store, or Target and adding your own touches and props are just as good!
