I wasn’t there for the original airing of Scooby-Doo but I love him still. I used to own a number of DVDs with the Mystery Inc. gang. I don’t like the newer cartoons of them but I am excited to see the new movie Scoob. I think my two favorite series of the gang are the Scooby-Doo Where Are You and the New Scooby-Doo Movies. They are old yes, but they are the best. I included Scrappy even though he isn’t in the cover photo because he is so cute. Here is a little bit of trivia on the gang.

Scooby-Doo

Source Fatherly

His real name is Scoobert Doo. He is also called Scoob and Uncle Scooby by his nephew Scrappy-Doo. He is a Great Dane. His best friend is Shaggy as well as Shaggy’s pet. He is the only I know of with opposible thumbs. He uses his paws just like humans use hands. He is constantly hungry as is Shaggy. Scooby and Shaggy often seen eating or trying to procure food. He loves Scooby Snacks and will often do scary tasks because he gets a snack. He is friendly but a scaredy cat despite being a dog.

Shaggy

Source Paste Magazine

His real name is Norville Rogers. I would cling to a nick name too. He is also called Shaggy and Shag. Shaggy is Scooby’s best friend and owner. He is tall and lanky and even Velma can pick up and carry him and Scooby and run. Shaggy is quite the hippie and very laid back. He is always extremely hungry. He and Scooby can usually be found eating when left to their own devices. He is quite the chicken. Everything including his own shadow scares him and Scooby. Like Scooby, Scooby Snacks can be used to convince him to be brave.

Velma

Source Scoobypedia Fandom

Her name is Velma Dinkley. She is the brains of the gang. Not the others aren’t smart. They all have their specialties. She is just very intelligent on a wide variety of subjects. She constantly loses her glasses at the most inopportune times. She tends to be very skeptical but is a wiz at deciphering clues. Velma loves mysteries more than the rest of the gang. She tends to be competitive with other people who are highly intelligent like her.

Fred

Source Scoobypedia Fandom

His name is Fredrick Herman Jones. He is also known as Fred or Freddy. He drives the Mystery Machine and is the master trap builder of the gang. He is often look at as the leader of Mystery Inc. He is in every way the opposite of Shaggy but they are still the best of friends. When the group splits up to look for clues it is generally Fred with Velma and Daphne while Scooby and Shaggy go off together. He is physically strong and very brave. I don’t like the way he is portrayed more recently. His ascot is quite dapper.

Daphne

Source Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated Wiki Fandom

Her name is Daphne Blake. She is also known as Daph and Danger-prone Daphne. She earned the nickname Danger-prone Daphne because of all of them, she ends up being kidnapped and used as bait for the villains the most. Later on she learn Karate and other forms of self defense. She is adept at picking locks with hairpins. Despite her love of fashion she goes in dirty places and helps solve the mystery at hand.

Scrappy-Doo

Source National Post

Scrappy-Doo is Scooby-Doo’s nephew. He always runs headlong into danger. Quite the opposite of his Uncle Scooby. Scooby often has to double back and grab his nephew to keep him from danger. Like his Uncle Scooby, Scrappy is a great dane. Despite their differences in their ways of facing danger, Scrappy wants to be just like his uncle, solving mysteries. Surprisingly, Scrappy is strong enough to run carrying both Shaggy and Scooby. He is very smart too and generally walks on his hind legs.

These are the characters I grew up watching and loving. I showed these guys to my own kids. I have a feeling when my kids have kids, my kids will show my grandkids Scooby and the love will be there for another generation. Remember the newest movie in the franchise Scoob was released early to purchase on demand. I’ve also done an article for Scooby’s 50th anniversary if you want to check them out. Do you know anything about them that I left out? Let me know in the comments below. Til next week…
