E3 had me feeling all kinds of ways. We got word of a Breath of the Wild 2, Animal Crossing: New Horizon, and so much more. I remember attempting to go to bed after the excitement died down and wondering, “What happened to the naked-man-on-the-beach video game?”. I remember it looking weird yet intriguing and after 20 minutes of Googling, I found the title of the game that escaped me, Death Stranding.

Death Stranding will be an action-adventure game developed by Kojima Productions and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The original trailer began on a beach with pitch-black sand littered with the carcasses of hundreds of marine creatures. Viewers are then pivoted to a scene in which it appears an escaped male prisoner has just given birth to a tiny baby. While crying tears of joy and fear, the baby disappears, reduced to thick ichor filled footprints as the man begins to follow, revealing a C-section scar. Upon looking up to the sky, five figures are suspended in the air, seemingly drifting off over the horizon. It is here where the credits begin rolling and viewers are left wondering what they just watched.

Immediately after viewing the trailer, the first time around, I remember getting the sense that the world was nearing the end and that babies became a hot commodity. The mystery of it all captivated me for weeks until eventually, I gave up, there wasn’t much hype around it and when I did reference it no one knew what I was gabbing about. That is until this years E3 hit and I found a new trailer for Death Stranding and my excitement has been mashed together with a touch of disappointment.

I have to say the star power in this video game is strong. Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead), Mads Mikkelsen (Rogue One), Léa Seydoux (Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol), Margaret Qualley (Death Note), Tommie Earl Jenkins (Agent Cody Banks), Troy Baker (Naruto), and Lindsay Wagner (Warehouse 13) are all voicing characters within the game. They also provided motion capture and 3D scanning, causing their characters to look exactly like them.baby backpack

The game gives me an Axe Cop kind of vibe like a kid came up with the idea and a bunch of adults just ran with it. I don’t want to spoil the trailer for those who have yet to see it however, baby backpacks are kind of freaky. Baby backpacks are exactly as they sound, backpacks that hold a baby. They seem to have some crazy powers that the adults of the world are exploiting. While the game play appeared to be a bit weak, the story line seems insane which is keeping me prepared to purchase Death Stranding for the PlayStation 4 on November 8, 2019.
