Spoilers will be talked about below, so please be sure to watch the latest episode before reading on! This review is based off of the dub version of Super that currently airs on Toonami.
Here we are at Episode 102 of Dragon Ball Super and we’re deep into the Tournament Of Power. After last week’s brief alliance between Goku and Universe 6’s Saiyans Kale and Caulfia against most of Universe 11’s Pride Troopers, we set our sights on Universe 2 and their band of fighters. Did they have what it took to change the layout of the Tournament Of Power? Lets get into our recap and review to find out!

First up, we have Goku running fast with 18 and 17 behind him. They agree to split up and go their separate ways to deal with the other fighters. 18 runs off and then 17, but suddenly the mysterious girl who was watching all three of them at the end of Episode 101 shows up dramatically. Announcing to everyone that Universe 2 is entering the fray, super dramatically and introduces two more fighters for her universe. This gets the attention of almost everyone in the field and even the deities sitting up in the stands — Beerus is super annoyed that they are taking forever. This then leads for the trio of Universe 2 fighters to enter a super long transformation sequence, think Sailor Moon like which leads to a hilarious moment from out of nowhere with 17 blasting them right out of it. This then gets even more absurd with everyone, Goku and Top included, chastising 17 for doing an “illegal” move — Beerus is the only other one who thinks 17 did the right thing and should take every advantage they can get. 17 then agrees to them to take their time to transform and sits on a rock waiting.

Eventually after another drawned out transformation sequence for the Universe 2 trio, they finally change and are combat ready. The leader becomes this red, chubby and super happy fighter. The yellow one becomes this trigger happy fighter. And finally, the blue one, becomes this feral angry fighter. The red launches a strong pheromone attack on everyone, making anyone who’s hearted instantly smitten. This causes Gohan’s group to spread out and everyone was worried about Master Roshi succumbing to it, but he doesn’t thanks to his training with Purar episodes back. Frieza just swats it off and it has no affect on either Goku, Vegeta or 17; and Jiren eventually blasts the smoke out of the arena.

The red one then begins to fight Vegeta and things seem more into the Saiyan Prince’s favor. Well that is until she starts spinning into a massive wheel and charges straight at Vegeta. Vegeta is about to punch her out of it but at the last second decides better and jumps away, he’s weirdly trembling over it. The red one actually ends up hitting a Universe 10 fighter that Piccolo was fighting out of the arena. Elsewhere, Goku is dealing with the yellow one and her long range attacks that actually get the best of him and blasts him in the face.

The real chunk of the second half of the episode is actually about 17 and the blue Universe 2 fighter, the feral one. At first she has the advantage against 17, and is zig zagging around the entire field like a giant pinball. But this was just a ploy by 17 and she suckers her in with a giant energy barrier that stops her in her tracks. 17 expands it enough to send her flying and out of the arena but she’s saved by yet another Universe 2 fighter — a flying fighter — who brings her back. The flying one even also manages to get a sneak attack in on 17 before doing so, causing him to fall hard. On the way back to the field, the two Universe 2 fighters have a little heart to heart in that overdone Sailor Moon style; on the ground 18 finally shows up to give a prep talk to her brother. She knew 17 was holding back a bit and this eventually causes 17 to go all out.

17 doesn’t wait for the Universe 2 fighters to come back to the ground and instead launches an all out attack on them both. First he eliminates the flying one easily, kicking her into the stands and giving an automatic ring out against her. Next he has a more focus and dramatic fight against the blue one. So much so, that it eventually reaches the light source for the Tournament arena in the Null Realm — which honestly looks like a sun at first glance.

17 get’s launched into it and actually siphons energy from it to charge up a powerful beam that he fires at the blue one, that eventually pushes her out of the arena into the null space beneath it getting another ring out against Universe 2. But before 17 can catch his breath, the red one comes charging at him wanting revenge. She no longer has her happy go lucky attitude and preaching about love, but instead she is red hot and burning with revenge in her mind. The episode then suddenly ends here with a dramatic face off between the two.

So as you can see here 17 was the real star of the episode this week after laying low or not doing much tournament wise after his introduction weeks again and his one on one spar against Goku. We finally got to see how overly powerful he became over the years, so much so he can take the energy from a fake sun and use it against others! 17 also gave us the best moment of the tournament so far when he blasted the Universe 2 fighters just like that as they were transforming. It was nice to flip the script on the lengthy transformations anime tends to give it’s characters and just get right down to the fighting instead.

One thing I found interesting though is the lack of Universe 6 in the episode, whatever happened to Cabba and Hit after their appearance a few episodes back. Its like they just up and vanished while everything was going on. But speaking of Universe 6, the blue fighter of Universe 2 seemed to be voiced by Caulifa’s voice actress. I’m not 100% sure, but it sure did sound like her.
