Spoilers will be talked about below, so please be sure to watch the latest episode before reading on! This review is based off of the dub version of Super that currently airs on Toonami.
Remember how Goku was flanked by some of the Universe 9 fighters after just the first minute of the Tournament of Power in the last episode? Well, that’s what Episode 98 was all about as Goku fought by himself against nearly all of Universe 9’s team. Was he able to survive against their onslaught or did he get eliminated by them all? Lets dive into our weekly review/recap shall we?

The episode picks up seconds from where we left off with Goku cornered by Bergamo, Lavender, Basil and the others. Goku is significantly out numbered here but he never goes into his Super Saiyan Blue form that saved him from elimination last episode, cause as Whis states to Supreme Kai, it’s still a form that drains significant amounts of energy and without any use of recovery items Goku will be at a disadvantage if he burns through it. So Goku is forced to fight in his based form against them all.

It’s not easy and Goku is slightly overpowered by Universe 9, and is about to be paralyzed by Lavender’s poison attack. But due to the Zeno Expo episodes ago, Goku and Gohan develop a way of using their Ki as sort of a barrier to block he poison attack. While this new technique has not name, it does give Goku the advantage against the three brothers and he gets the advantage. That is until they trap Goku in a triangle formation, which the Universe 9’s Supreme Kai calls the Dangerous Triangle — everyone else in the stands such as Supreme Kai, Elder Kai and Beerus all quip that Universe 9’s Supreme Kai is just horrible at naming things from that point on. The Dangerous Triangle attack is effective in trapping Goku though and it slowly begins to push him closer to the edge. That is until Vegeta sees what’s up from wherever he’s fighting in the arena and rushes in to save Goku by jumping into the Dangerous Triangle as well!

Here, Beerus yells at both Vegeta and Goku from the stands, that they need to play it smart. But with them being both Sayians and having massive egos, especially for Vegeta, no one listens. Vegeta goes charging at Lavender, while Goku has to deal with Basil and Bergamo. Goku tries to warn Vegeta about being careful about Lavender’s poison attacks but Vegeta tells Goku to shut it and does his own protective Ki barrier as well.

While fighting Lavender though, more Universe 9 fighters step in to help out. One of them freezes Vegeta’s hand while another taunts Goku to hit his body which does nothing to him. Things look bleak for them both as they edge closer to elimination. However, Universe 9 gets too cocky after they trap Vegeta’s other hand into webbing, Vegeta just goes Super Saiyan and flings the web and ice fighters out of the ring, and in this split second it gives Goku the advantage to turn into Super Saiyan himself and eliminate the other two fighters he’s dealing with leaving only Bergamo, Lavender and Basil left, who they themselves are right at the edge of the arena now. Elsewhere, Frieza was occupied being a sadist and torturing a bat-like fighter by shooting death beams at their wings and joints.

Back to Goku and Vegeta against Bergamo, Lavender and Basil and it becomes a beam tug-of-war as the trio fires their Dangerous Triangle Beam at Goku and Vegeta, who counter it with their dual-Kamehameha/Final Flash attack which is just enough to push the brothers off the stage and eliminated from the tournament entirely. Hilariously though, another Universe 9 fighter was eliminated off screen after the Universe 9 Supreme Kai was wondering who’s left. It was the rabbit-like fighter who magically pops up just seconds after the Kai asks. However, there is one more Universe 9 fighter left.

Turns out that fighter is none other then the bat-like fighter that Frieza has been toying around with for most of the episode. Eventually he has had enough of Frieza and jumps off the arena and into the abyss, eliminating him and Universe 9 entirely!

Its at this very instant that the episode gets extremely dark. Here the Omni-Kings look at their touch pads that keep track of all the fighters and realize that Universe 9 is all out of fighters. Here they begin erasing all of Universe 9! They simply raise their hand and that is that, Universe 9 is no more as it’s fighters, God of Destruction and Supreme Kai are instantly erased alongside their universe too! The only person who’s left is the angel of that world, who’s one of Whis’ siblings, and he has a weird smirk on his face. This same smirk is shown on the Grand Minister’s face as well as the episode comes to a dramatic close.

While it was weird that we spent the whole episode just focus on one of the many battles that is going in the arena of the Tournament Of Power, it does give screen time for the entire Universe 9 that they didn’t get before so far; which then in turn highlights the lost of them being instantly erased by the Omni-Kings at the end of the episode. The only thing that felts weird was how Universe 9 got all these other fighters to join them, fighters that we never knew existed. Since a few episodes ago it was revealed that Universe 9 didn’t have many fighters, so it’s weird how they suddenly found such fighters for them. Other then that though, I suspect that something is up with the angels and the Grand Minister with how ominous they looked at the end of the episode. I just hope it isn’t revealed that Whis has a hand in all this as well…
