Hello Gothamites! Welcome back to episode 5, Pena Dura!
We begin this episode with Gordon and Bullock who follow up on Barbara’s lead to the guy who sold the RPG that blew up Haven. They think they have the advantage, but that quickly changes when they are surrounded. Then a team from the army comes through the roof and kills everyone. The leader of the team is called Eduardo Dorrance and he is an old acquaintance of Gordon. They are sent from the mainland with the mission to clear the city from threats and make it safe again. When they search the place of the RPG seller they find his ledger with the names of all his buyers. The person who bought 2 RPG’s? Edward Nygma.
The man in question starts to lose his own mind more and more as he tries to figure out what is going on with him. He knows that his other self has something to do with it, he just doesn’t know how he does it. Then Gordon and Dorrance walk into his house to arrest him. Nygma gives some kind of confession but activates a pressure activated EOD by pulling a book from the bookshelf and escapes before Gordon and Dorrance can take him captive. Gordon walks on different chairs and tables to avoid touching the floor and setting off the bomb where Dorrance is standing on to reach the bookshelf. The book Nygma pulled was a chess book about knights, so Gordon uses the knights move (two up/down and one left/right) to find the right book. He has to choose between a book on butterflies and another chess book. Gordon picks the chess book and the EOD stops.
Nygma being out in the wild makes him a moving target for all the people that want revenge for what happened at Haven. He thinks he is safe, but then he is captured by a woman and her two sons. They want revenge for killing Jojo, who was their dog. They have made an electric chair from an old car and a couple of batteries and have Nygma strapped into it. When they start the electrocution, Nygma gets a memory where Penguin tells him that he’ll fix him. Then the car stops working and Nygma is able to convince them that the fuel line is clogged. They pull the fuel line loose and it seems like that solved the problem, but the combination of the fuel and the sparks cause the entire car to blow up and Nygma can escape in all the chaos that happens next.
Then Nygma goes to Penguin to talk about what he just remembered. Nygma is of the opinion that Penguin did something to him to control his actions, but Penguin defends himself by saying that he only paid Hugo Strange to bring him back to life. Then the GCPD and the Delta team force their way into the city hall to arrest Nygma, but he escapes. Bullock, Edwardo and Penguin end up in a standoff. Penguin says he’ll count to three before mowing them all down but when he starts counting at one, a sniper kills all of his men and he is taken captive. The escaped Nygma flees to Barbara to find the next on his list: Hugo Strange. Barbara doesn’t know exactly where Strange is but does know where to find his lab. When Nygma finally finds Strange, the latter confesses that he put a chip in his brain to control him, but that he is not the one having the controls. He offers to write the name down but sprays Nygma with a neurotoxic instead. This will keep him calm when Strange opens up his skull to ‘reboot’ the system.
Just when Strange is done with Nygma, Gordon and Dorrance walk into the lab. There Dorrance reveals that his boss Waller and himself are the ones controlling Nygma. This is an attempt to clean the city for good. Dorrance gives Gordon an option: put a bullet in Nygma or he puts one in him. Gordon doesn’t like any of the options so he distracts Dorrance and escapes. Dorrance turns Nygma back ‘on’ and orders him to kill Gordon. Meanwhile, Penguin has been released from the GCPD and takes his dog Edward with him when he enters a secret basement. It is hard to see, but it looks like there are a lot of gold objects stored there.
Somewhere else in Gotham, Bruce has a hard time finding Selina. Alfred gives him the advice that she is perfectly capable to take care of herself, but Bruce still worries. He finally finds her in the Sirens Club where she is treated as a hero because she killed Jeremiah. Selina tells Bruce that she was in the alley the night his parents were murdered. She sat on the fire escape and did nothing, not because she was a scared kid like him but because she still doesn’t care for other people. That is who she was and always will be.
At the same time, we discover that Jeremiah is not dead! He was wearing some body armour to protect him from Selina’s knife because he wanted Selina and Bruce to think that he was dead. Ecco wakes him up to show him the results of what a doctor has been working on. We only see the people from the back, but it looks like Jeremiah has transformed two people into resembling Thomas and Martha Wayne.
