Slight spoilers may be talked about below, so please be sure to watch the latest episode before reading on! This review is based on the dub version of Super that currently airs on Toonami.
We’re just hours away from the start of the Tournament Of Power and with it, all the universes in the cosmos are scrambling to get the final line up for their teams. The only team that isn’t as stressed out about it is actually Goku’s Universe 7 team who as we’ve seen in the past few episodes have been either training or joining their team. But how are the other universes handling the pressures of universal annihilation? Let’s find out with our review!
Episode 91 starts out actually with the Zeno’s playing in their place a game of rock paper scissors but gradually growing bored of it and so they call over Whis’ father, The Grand Minister to do something fun with them. He instead begins showing them all the universes and how they are fairing in their preparations for the Tournament Of Power. He first show’s them Goku and the rest of Universe 7.
Goku and all the others are back at Bulma’s house and they begin to devise a strategy on how to win the battle royal, but then it becomes apparent that Vegeta isn’t there and he’s training at Dende’s tower in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. This bother’s Goku with Vegeta ditching him, but then the others bring up a fair point that Goku has been fighting almost everyone without his Saiyan counterpart for the past few hours while Vegeta was on baby duty with Bulma. So Goku instead asks Whis to train with him and the powerful angel agrees to it.
We then go back to the Grand Minister who then begins to show him the other universes having trouble making their teams. First, we go to Universe 9, where we catch up with Basil, Lavender, and Bergamo — the three wolf brothers from the Zeno Expo. They’re having a hard time finding other members for their team, mostly due to the fact that they basically told their universe that if they didn’t win the Tournament Of Power they would all be erased. Which well, ended up causing their universe to sink into chaos and anarchy with everyone attacking each other. Next, we go to Universe 6 [which I admit for the past few weeks, I’ve mistakenly called Universe 8 for some odd reason] and actually see what Hit has been up too. He’s been on a recruiting mission for Champa on building a team for the tournament and was asked to seek out the villainous Frost — who’s been in hiding since his treacherous plans came to light during the Universe 6 & 7 saga from a few months ago. Frost joins up with Hit as we enter a commercial break.
Back from the break and we get a little bit light-hearted by catching up with Yamcha who’s been staying in his apartment the whole time waiting for Goku or someone really to come recruit him. Funny enough, Master Roshi shows up at his window asking his former student for help. Believing it’s his moment finally, he agrees and the two meet on the roof alongside Oolong and Puar — Yamcha’s shapeshifting cat friend. Who, speaking of the later, Master Roshi needs help from. Turns out Roshi is actually super aware of his biggest weakness, beautiful women. This causes Roshi to ask Puar to shape shit into the most beautiful woman ever so he can resist the urge to think with his junk and instead be ready to fight any woman who may be in the Tournament Of Power. So as this was going on, it was confirmed that Yamcha is not joining the team at all.
We then head to the Sayian Capsule that Bulma has to find out that Goku and Whis are training under the effects of heavy gravity — similar to how Goku and Vegeta normally did it back in Dragon Ball Z. Whis being as powerful as he is, is able to dodge Goku countless times and even tells Goku how much he leaves his sides open. This causes Whis to grapple Goku the same way Top did back at the Zeno Expo. Goku breaks free from it though by actually biting Whis on the hand, which is basically Goku’s go-to-method for breaking free of anything since the old Dragon Ball days.
After this, we actually see what Top and Despro have been up too and they’ve been actually stressed out with the Tournament Of Power looming just hours away. They’re even more stressed out when they’re wondering what happened to their other friend, The General. Who, weirdly enough is way too busy trying to save an angry cat from getting electrocuted.
The Grand Minister then brings us to Universe 11’s counterpart Universe, Universe 2 which is the weirdest universe we’ve come across so far. It’s a Super Sentai/Sailor Moon style universe where everyone is uber powerful but at the same time take forever to transform and do their signature moves. Next, we go to Gowasu and his Universe 10 team that’s filled with just muscle heads and brutes. Turns out they’re doing a team building exercise and making a video that Gowasu wants to put on Godtube.
Finally, the Grand Minister reveals that not everything is going well for Goku and the others. So we head back to Bulma’s house and see Goku alongside everyone else still trying to figure out what the game plan for the battle royal is. But then we suddenly cut to Bulma looking over Bulla, she gets a phone call from Hercule that’s super important. So she walks in on the others chilling and planning, telling that that Hercule called with bad news. Turns out that Majin Buu has entered a deep sleep, a deep sleep that can last for two months or so. This causes panic in the whole team with Goku and even Beerus going to check up on Buu. This new turn of events actually pisses off Beerus since it’s the same thing Buu did to them back at the Zeno expo and the angry god still hasn’t let go of the pudding incident between the two of them. During his entire monologue explaining things to Whis, Goku actually quietly slips away from everyone via Instant Transmission to see Buu. The episode ends on this note with a startled and confused Beerus.
So as you can see, it wasn’t an actual action-heavy episode, that was last weeks. This week was setting up more of the pieces of the upcoming tournament for everyone else outside of Goku’s team. It was nice to see Frost back again, along with more of Hit, Top and Despro. You can tell with how they’re building towards the actual Tournament Of Power that Universe 6, 7 and 11 will be the key universes to look forward to lasting until the closing moments of the tournament. Sadly though, it’s a shame that Universe 10 is now an afterthought after the entire Zamasu/Black saga. They don’t have anyone notable outside of Gowasu — who isn’t at all a fighter. Same goes for Universe 9, with only Bergamo and his two brothers, it looks like Universe 9 may be one of the quicker eliminations. Don’t get me started on Universe 2, that one makes no sense to me but I have a feeling they’ll be foils for Master Roshi, who may or may not get eliminated personally by them. And if Buu is out cold for two months, is it time for Yamcha to finally join the Universe 7 team! Time will tell if he does, since Dragon Ball Super is actually on break until January 5th.
So hurry on back Goku!
