Are you ready for this week’s edition of TGON’s Couch Co-Op collection? Today we’ll be talking about one of my favorite titles to pick back up over and over again, Diablo 3. Diablo 3 was a long-awaited sequel title to the classic dungeon crawler Diablo 2, where we get an intense look at the war between heaven and hell and what that means for the people living in-between. Let’s get started!
Diablo 3 was released in 2012 for PC and Mac, 2013 for Xbox 360 and PS3, and 2014 for Xbox ONE and PS4 by Blizzard Entertainment. The Diablo franchise has a massive following, so it’s no wonder that Diablo 3 was the best selling PC game of 2012. Unfortunately, couch co-op isn’t available on the PC and Mac versions, only online and local play (with additional PC or Mac units). You’ll have to console it if you’re looking for that experience with this game!
The ever growing story-line of the Diablo series tells of the battles between hell and heaven, which often branch into the world of the living. There are a few separate lords of hell, with Diablo being the big-bad, and a variety of lesser demons that scheme and plot to destroy heaven itself. Heaven has a host of angels and arch-angels that are sworn to protect the gates of heaven. In the midst of all this are the Nephalim, which are essentially super strong humans with both demon and angel blood in their family tree, who are tasked with keeping order when either side lashes out.
How to Play
Diablo 3 is all about the loot. You will hack, slash, and spell your way through hordes of enemies in order to get more loot. The better your loot, the more damage you can take and dish out. The 3rd person dungeon crawler game-play has you exploring abandoned churches, deserts, and a variety of other ever-changing maps. You’ll face mini bosses leading you up to the big-bad of that particular “Act” where you’ll be challenged by an enemy with immense power. In Diablo 3, you’re traveling around trying to seal all of the big demons you face into a black soul-stone so you can seal them away forever. So use your weapons and spells, and slay some demons!
There are 7 different classes to choose from in Diablo 3. Each lets you choose between a male and female model, and gives you the option of creating your own name or having one randomly generated.
Barbarian – This character is all about being up close and personal. The barbarian class excels at hand to hand combat and uses the Strength stat primarily. Enjoy cleaving enemies with your giant axe? Pick the barbarian.
Wizard – The wizard is often considered a glass cannon, meaning it can dish out a lot of damage, but doesn’t take it as well. There are a few skills that will help you survive longer, but you’re better off disintegrating your enemies before they get too close. Love big spells and damage? Play the wizard.
Monk – Monks are a great combination of close combat and mitigation. They’re able to dish out decent damage, but they are also a fantastic team player. You’ll be able to use auras that benefit you and all other party members as well! Looking for some hand-to-hand combat mixed with some helpful spells? The monk is for you.
Demon Hunter – The demon hunter is a ranged character that excels in keeping out of trouble. They pack a few traps in their arsenal to keep the enemies at bay while using their hand crossbows to rain serious damage down. Like being too quick to catch? Grab the demon hunter.
Witch Doctor – This character was the spiritual successor to the necromancer class of old, before they added it to the game of course. Witch doctors excel in poisons and plagues that weaken enemy forces, as well as summoning critters and constructs to help fight and defend. Like sewing some madness and summoning zombie dogs? The witch doctor is your choice.
Crusader – Crusaders were added with the Reaper of Souls expansion which you can purchase separately. They are like a mixture of the monk and barbarian, because they are packed full of spells but use their heavy armor and flails to dish out heavy melee damage. Love being a holy warrior that excels in destroying demons and monsters? The crusader is calling for you.
Necromancer – The necromancer was a favorite character back in Diablo 2, and they eventually brought them to Diablo 3 with a price tag of course. Necromancers love to create small armies to command while they stand back and curse their enemies. Want an army of minions? (and no not the little yellow ones) The ways of the necromancer are yours.
The Diablo series of games have always been a loot grind. You beat the game, and play through it again on a harder difficulty which awards you better loot and a tougher challenge. Diablo 3 also added in additional game-play modes to give players that have beaten the game a different path to follow. The best part of it all is the loot though. There’s nothing more exciting than seeing the amber pillar of light that appears when a legendary item has dropped.
Not only is there an impressive list of loot available, but you can also transmogrify your armor and weapons to customize your look. Did you really enjoy that bone handled axe? You can spend some gold to make your current weapon have that appearance. You can even add dyes to change the color of your armor pieces. And there is PLENTY of space, purchasable with some extra gold, to allow you enough storage to satisfy all of your characters.
This game really had a lot to live up to. Diablo 2 was a classic, and many people were dying to see a sequel. Diablo 3 really kept with the same style of game-play while adding just enough to make it stand on its own. The main story, and all of the fun little journals and notes you will find in the world, allow the players to really get invested in what is happening. Acts of terror, destruction, and mass-murder all drive you to put an end to the madness. If you and your buddies are into RPGs, fantasy games, or even just slaughtering hordes of enemies, than Diablo 3 is right for you.
