We have reached the season 5 finale of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.! Luckily, we have learned that it won’t be the series finale as we were renewed for a sixth season. Let’s jump in!
Our finale starts immediately where we left off – you don’t have much of a choice when the climax of Avengers: Infinity War is looming over you. The team is debating whether to use the C.E.N.T.I.P.E.D.E. to infuse with Jiaying’s DNA to save Phil Coulson, or infuse with Odium to kill former friend Glenn Talbot – rapidly becoming the supervillain Graviton – to save the world. Tensions get high with Yo-Yo Rodriguez, Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons in favor of saving the world while Daisy Johnson, Mack Mackenzie and Melinda May are in favor of saving Coulson, believing he could save the world if alive. Mack decides to put it to a vote when May smashes the Odium, leaving them only one option – to save Coulson. Yo-Yo breaks down. Fitz tells them to prep Coulson for injection, and prepare for the end of the world.
Talbot gets upset with his kidnappee Robin, threatening that he will absorb her if she doesn’t tell him the location of gravitonium on Earth. She calls his bluff. Her mom tells her not to co-operate, but Robin says this is the last time she will see her mom otherwise. Talbot takes away Polly, Robin’s mom, and asks for her to co-operate once more.
Yo-Yo tells Mack the part from her vision that she has kept from him; that he is going to die. He simply says that they all die someday. Meanwhile, Graviton crashes his ship into downtown Chicago. People start fleeing for their lives. Yo-Yo visits Coulson and explains that she doesn’t want him dead; she just doesn’t want everyone placing their last chip on Coulson. Coulson says he would have agreed with Yo-Yo.
As Daisy is preparing to leave, she runs into Deke. He tells her he is planning leaving. He never felt like he fit in with the team, and he would like to see the world before it is destroyed. After all, there’s a good chance he is about to blink out of existence anyway.
As Coulson lay dying in his hospital bed being taken care of by Simmons, May asks for some time alone with him. She tells him how much hell they put themselves through to get the C.E.N.T.I.P.E.D.E device, but now it’s ultimately his choice to take it. She begs him to find some reason to keep fighting.
In Chicago, Graviton rips up a gigantic pillar of Earth and absorbs the gravitonium from it.
Mack forms a team with Daisy going after Graviton, with himself, Fitz and May rescuing Polly and Robin and the other helping bystanders. Seeing Mack take charge of the situation, Daisy decides to nominate Mack as the new leader of S.H.I.E.L.D., saying Mack is more suited than she is. She puts it to a vote and everyone agrees – even Coulson, who has arrived on deck – except Mack.
As Mack narrates the gameplan, the team arrives in Chicago to do what they do best: Protect.
May, Fitz and Mack arrive at the building where Robin is being held captive and rescue her, but she tells them that her mom is deeper inside. Mack goes looking for her as Fitz notices that neither of them live, according to the prophecy.
Daisy gets ready to leave with Coulson, when he admits that he isn’t going because he didn’t take the serum; in fact, he can barely stand. As we see the previous “last footage of Daisy Johnson seen alive” play out, Daisy orders Coulson to return to the base and take the serum as runs off to face Graviton. He sits back down and slumps in his chair.
This is where it all gets fast. Can you keep up?
Mack heads deeper into the building and finds Polly, but right as they head outside, they are attacked by Remorath marauders.
Outside, Daisy tries talking Graviton down, convincing him that he is already a hero by being a military general. No one signs up to have friends die for fun.
Fitz and May show up last minute and kill the marauders, saving Mack and Polly.
Davis asks Coulson if he would like to return to the base, but notices he isn’t breathing.
Graviton tells Daisy that her speeches were already fed to him by HYDRA and S.H.I.E.L.D. before betraying him; they should join forces, but not like that. He grabs her and launches hundreds of feet into the air.
Polly and Robin are reunited and are helped out of the building.
Davis arrives at base and tells Yo-Yo and Simmons that Coulson is dying.
Graviton reverses his charge and slams Daisy hundred of feet downward into the Earth.
Before the rest of the team can escape, the building Fitz, May and Mack are in partially collapses on top of Fitz – not Mack, like has been heavily hinted.
As Simmons runs to look for the Jiaying serum, Yo-Yo begins desperately giving Coulson CPR.
Graviton begins absorbing the half-dead Daisy, deciding to use her powers to dig up more gravitonium from the Earth.
Simmons makes it to the med-bay, and sees that the C.E.N.T.I.P.E.D.E. is gone.
As Robin boards the ship to safety, she stops, shocked; something is different. They broke the loop.
As Simmons sprints back and cries out to get the defibrillators for Coulson and May and Mack struggle to lift debris off of Fitz, Daisy fights for her life not to be absorbed by Graviton. She notices something stored in her gauntlet; Coulson snuck the C.E.N.T.I.P.E.D.E. to her, and has been secretly been urging her to use it with coded hints. She injects herself, magnifying her powers to Avengers-level. Right as Coulson wakes up and the rubble is cleared off Fitz, Daisy bursts out of Graviton’s grasp and blasts Graviton several miles into the air, shattering buildings as he goes.
As Graviton floats out in space and slowly freezes, a panicking, concussed Fitz says that Mack will have to carry him out because he can’t feel his legs. Moving a large boulder, Mack and May assess the damage – and it isn’t good. Fitz is impaled by a piece of metal and bleeding out fast. Fitz is more concerned with getting Polly and Robin to safety, and they remind him that he already did that. Confused, Fitz again repeats that he thinks his legs are broken. With tears in his eyes, Mack assures him he has been through worse. He hasn’t. Mack and May begin sobbing as Fitz passes away.
At the lab, Simmons is happy to see Mack return from the mission. The look of realization on her face says everything you need to know.
As a memorial is carved, the team solemnly share a bottle of Haig. Coulson urges everyone to have fun – it’s a going away party, not a funeral! He just wishes he got to say goodbye to Fitz before he left. Simmons assures him that once they wake up the cryogenically frozen Fitz – the one en route to saving the world in a future that no longer needs saving – she will say goodbye for him. Coulson says his goodbyes, hugging Yo-Yo, Mack and a heavily crying Daisy. He tells her he left her a note of how proud he is, and that Simmons says he only has days left.
With the end of his life rapidly approaching and his new memorial plaque installed by Davis, Coulson steps off his plane onto the sunny shores of… where else, but the real Tahiti. He remarks that it is pretty magical, after all. May approaches next to him and asks if there is anything else he wants to do. He suggestively says just one thing, and she suggests parasailing. They hold hands as the Zephyr flies away overhead.
Aboard, the new team of Daisy, Mack, Yo-Yo, Simmons, Piper and Davis fly through the air as Daisy asks the new director Mack where they go from here.
Wow, what an episode! S.H.I.E.L.D. sure knows how to do finales! Fitz’s death shattered me emotionally, and I will miss Coulson and Talbot. Truly the end of an era.
This is a 10/10 episode if I have seen one.
Keep going, Agents!
