Santa Clarita Diet Season 2 Episode 7 – A Change of Heart

With a title like “A Change of Heart”, we can certainly expect some confrontation. There are a whole lot of characters that could apply to, for a variety of different reasons. Follow along as we explore this week’s episode to find the heart of the matter! Okay… no more corny jokes.

Attachment Issues

Sheila and Joel are where we last left them, standing in the kitchen staring at an almost completely severed finger. We all know that Sheila accidentally bit through when attempting to avoid killing that bag of human trash, Carl, but Joel is having difficulty grasping the situation. Sheila does her best to frame out the silver lining that the investor wanted a secondary meeting to discuss the modern house designs that Sheila whipped up. Joel still can’t see past her potentially getting worse and ending up as only “ a mouth in a chair.” As they argue, Sheila gestures with her injured hand and sends the now severed finger flying.

They search for it and end up finding Abby’s old pacifier under the fridge. I’m way more horrified that they haven’t cleaned under their fridge since she was old enough to be using a pacifier… yuck! The doorbell rings, and we see a very pleased looking Eric all set to go on a Father/Son seafood distribution company front to investigate Japopo’s. Unfortunately, Joel is already recognized there as Yelp Man, so that idea is shot. Sheila finds the finger, locates an ant problem, and Joel whisks Eric inside.

Eric is beaming with excitement.

Eric gets to work attaching Sheila’s finger again. Apparently, since the severed finger was still alive-ish, it could be reattached by simply binding the finger and letting it heal. Eric tries throwing the Father/Son idea into the mix again, and Joel shoots it down. Eric changes the subject to how exactly Sheila bit her finger off. He playfully offers the idea that Abby go visit Carl with a tray and essentially throws Abby right under the bus. Whoops!

Jugglers

As Sheila and Joel head upstairs to talk with Abby about the tray incident, they get into a discussion about jugglers. Joel has WAY too much information to throw into that one, but the sentiment is clear. The Hammonds do have a lot going on, and it can’t be easy to stay afloat with a life like theirs. They stop outside Abby’s bedroom door to discuss their plan of attack for speaking with her about the tray incident and have her come clean on her own. Which is an awesome decision, until Abby lets them know that she can hear them. So much for the plan!

Abby comes clean.

As Abby comes clean, Joel and Sheila launch into parenting mode. Every time she says something, they have a parental response. She needs to learn a lesson, people can be jerks, she can’t just hit people, etc. If they took a few minutes to actually hear her part of the story, then they may be a tad more understanding about the situation. Abby starts to get snippy back, stating that she learned from their mistakes. At the end of it all Abby has no remorse, and I can’t blame her in the least.

Sheila and Joel think that Abby is turning into a monster due to their horrific life choices. It is true that ripping the Serbian apart in front of her or murdering their neighbor and leaving him in the bathtub aren’t the best life choices. They resolve to get Abby’s life back on track, by taking her to see Christian and apologize to him. Admirable, but that doesn’t exactly seem appropriate for their high school age daughter. Then they get some more juggler talk… turns out Joel watched a documentary and is now relating his entire life to it!

Joel is obsessed with juggling.

The Right Thing

The Hammonds arrive at Christian’s house for Abby’s apology. She’s not excited about it and continues to give them lip about them not apologizing to their victims. She makes some pretty fair points; the Hammonds aren’t exactly model citizens. Sheila and Joel don’t budge though, and she’s still forced to go apologize. They approach the door of a beautiful home, and Christian answers. After he sees that Abby is far from excited to be there, he happily invites them all in.

Christian knows the real story.

Meanwhile, Eric decides he wants to continue the seafood distributor plan. He goes into Japopo’s, and the pitch does NOT go well. He keeps asking about clams over and over again during the pitch, which gets him thrown out. As he leaves, head hung low, he notices that a delivery truck is parked in the back of Japopo’s. Looks like Eric is about to go snooping around! Hopefully that doesn’t end too badly…

Eric plays spy.

Cut back to Christian’s house, and he’s spread legged eating a corndog on one couch staring at the Hammonds on the other. Abby starts to apologize and decides that her getting her ipad back wasn’t reason enough. She instead decides to insult him, which results in him revealing that his sex life started at age 13 which he is incredibly proud of. Peace talks begin to deteriorate until his parents come home. Then they break down entirely.

Chris and Christa are Christian's parents.

Christian’s parents are Chris and Christa, which makes a lot of sense. Joel explains that Abby hit him with a tray and they came here to make her apologize. Problem is, that they had no idea about the tray incident. Chris and Christa, seeing an opportunity to harm their rivals, decide that they’re going to contact principal Novak and provide the proof he needs to expel Abby. Joel and Sheila made Abby do the “right thing”, and now they’ve got bigger problems.

Christa is a monster.

Focus on One Blade

The Hammonds decide to get ahead of the expulsion issue and go see principal Novak first. That way, they can make Abby apologize to him, show some remorse, and get away with a slap on the wrist instead. Sheila came up with this brilliant plan since she’s be researching murderers… honestly not a bad plan considering their normal activities. Hopefully principal Novak isn’t holding a grudge against the Hammonds for… well ALL of the terrible things they’ve done to him and his grandmother thus far.

Joel thinks ahead.

We find Eric in Japopo’s snooping around. He spots the office, and heads inside. As he begins rummaging through the desk, he gets caught! Big shocker there. He says some silly line about the office not being the bathroom, and the scene ends. I’m not super excited for his chances there, the Japopo’s staff look pretty rough around the edges.

The Hammonds sit and wait for Principal Novak outside his house, and tensions run high. Abby pushes one to many buttons, and Joel lets out that they’re overwhelmed and unsure if the family will make it. Joel and Sheila let her in on all of the issues like missing fingers, and Abby realizes just how important faking her apology is. Novak comes home, and the Hammonds rush after him. He scrambles and drops his groceries as he sprints for the door.

Novak gets scared.

He can’t get the keys in fast enough, and spins to face them armed only with his pint of sherbet. Abby apologizes, and explains her side of the story. She mentions that she felt she needed to do something because no one else was stopping Christian from being a horrible human. Joel and Sheila finally grasp that what she did was for the right reason, even if it wasn’t the best solution to the issue, as principal Novak expels Abby.  Doing the right thing has never gone so wrong so many times in one day!

Abby gets expelled.

Sheila tries to chase after him to talk some sense, but he slams the door shut. The Hammonds have a real heartfelt moment on the porch as they praise Abby for doing the right thing. They also let out that they felt she was a monster. As Sheila tries to shush her, they realize that her recently severed finger is gone! Novak screams, and Sheila seizes the moment. They pretend that the door severed her finger, and blackmail Novak into keeping Abby in school. They even walk away with his precious sherbet to ice her finger.

Abby calls an end to the celebratory dance party.

Getting Shit Done

Eric calls and explains that he’s gotten himself locked in Japopo’s office so the Hammonds divide and conquer. Sheila and Abby are to reattach her finger, before Sheila heads off to the investor’s meeting alone since Carl won’t be in attendance. Joel heads to bail Eric out, so off to Japopo’s we go! Joel has to come clean about the distribution company and the tipping documentary. As he begs to have Eric released from the office, Mark exclaims that Eric locked HIMSELF in there.

Mark explains that Eric locked himself in.

Eric obviously panicked a tad during this whole situation. Joel lays into him because now he’ll get no help from owner Mark. Eric has good news though. Since he had locked himself in the office, he got to do some more snooping. He found out that there was a different seafood delivery company for just the one day that the clam special was served. One more clue closer to figuring out the zombie issue!

Ruby's Clams is the culprit.

Sheila pulls up to the meeting, and so does Carl. This doesn’t bode well at all! He begins the insults before they even get inside, so Sheila hangs back to calm down with the stress ball. We see her repeating an “I can do this” mantra over and over again before some deep breathing. The next thing we see is her covered in blood, seated the same way, only she’s in her driveway. Joel had woken her because he had no idea where she was and found her in the driveway. Sheila had clearly blacked out, since she was covered in blood, holding a heart, and had NO idea why.

Sheila blacked out.

Hopefully we find out next week! That’s a whole lot of blood without a story behind it! I’m glad that Abby was redeemed a bit there after they forced a few empty apologies out of her. Yeah hitting Christian wasn’t the best move, but it looked damn cool and he deserved it! I wonder where we’re going to go with Ruby’s Clams, since they apparently sold the bad clams. Tune in next week and we’ll see what fun the Hammonds are into next!
