Though Marvel fans everywhere are preparing for the simultaneous vicious excitement and impending doom that will arrive with Avengers: Infinity War (now to be released a week earlier! In theaters everywhere April 27th!), it looks as though there’s much more to come from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Infinity War promises the end to many of our favorite characters’ stories — some of whom we’ve spent 10 long and glorious years with — but with the announcement of Captain Marvel in 2019, it seems the plans for Marvel’s next generation are already in place.
But interestingly, in order to move forward we’re going to take a bit of a jump back. In time. Captain Marvel will be set in the 1990s, and we will see the return of Samuel L. Jackson as he reprises his role of Nick Fury.
Brie Larson will play the titular character, and writer Geneva Robertson-Dworet (who also wrote this year’s Tomb Raider reboot) told Entertainment Weekly that the character will be fiesty and full of personality. According to the interview, the film will have a much more light-hearted tone, merging action and comedy. This makes sense following the critical and popular acclaim given to Marvel’s more humorous ventures, like Guardians of the Galaxy (1 & 2), Spiderman: Homecoming and the totally out of the blue hit Thor: Ragnarok, which I personally think was the MCU’s best work.
If you’re like me, you’re probably wondering “Wait, if her story takes places in the 90s, where has she been all this time?”. That’s a question for the more devoted Marvel comic book fan, but I imagine she’s been off doing her own thing, uninvolved in the Avengers’ shenanigans — that is until the cosmic warlord Thanos threatens to destroy everything in his path and the Avengers start recruiting from all corners of the (Marvel Cinematic) universe.
Yes, I am suggesting that Captain Marvel will appear in Infinity War, because it wouldn’t make sense for her not to! But that’s just speculation.
