Voltron’s Season 5 Trailer Is Packed With Teasers About Lotor and His Generals!

Last week, Dreamworks dropped the trailer for season 5 of “Voltron: Legendary Defender.” This happened shortly after the season was set to air on March 2, 2018, as well as the announcement of a special Voltron panel at Emerald City Comic Con. A lot happened in that short amount of time, and this trailer was even more packed with information and hints about the season. Watch the trailer below and keep reading for an analysis!

The first thing I’d like to note is that Lance appears to be stepping up and taking charge in this trailer. There is no evidence right now to suggest that he’s in a leadership position, but it looks like he is finally getting some of the attention fans have been begging for. The crew has asked us to be patient with his character development, and right now there are hints that Lance may be getting that this season. Either way, go Lance!

At first, I didn’t think much of this moment. But then I noticed the diversity in their uniforms: most of them are wearing uniforms with symbols identical to Lotor and his generals, the two in the foreground appear to have served under Zarkon and one person in the bottom right background seems to have unidentifiable orange armor. This last bit is perplexing, and, although it’s a stretch, I can’t help but be reminded of Matt Holt’s gear when I look at that person mingling among the other Galra. This could be a battle or pre-battle scene, but it’s still interesting to see these different Galra gathered together.

To make it more interesting, you need to look at who is standing on the steps in the background. The figure it blurry, but it looks to me like either Acxa or Zethrid is standing on the steps and waiting to greet someone. Is it possible that we will see an extravagant reunion between Lotor and his generals? Because they’re wanted criminals for aiding Lotor, it would make sense for them to gather whatever forces they can to fight Zarkon. Perhaps this will be a welcome surprise for Lotor as well as the paladins.

It’s all but confirmed that the paladins meet Lotor’s generals at some point anyway.

This shot gives us more than just a look at our favorite fiery little Aries. Pausing the frames reveals some blurry figures that look suspiciously like Acxa (to Pidge’s right) and Zethrid (to Pidge’s left) in the background, along with Shiro and Matt.

This could mean absolutely nothing, but to me, it looks like the paladins are working with Lotor’s generals.

And now, the most significant moment of the trailer: Lotor’s proposition to the paladins.

“With our forces combined, we will provide the greatest threat Zarkon has ever faced.”

“With our forces combined” could mean a couple different things. My initial understanding of this line was that Lotor meant to join Team Voltron in their battle against Zarkon, plain and simple. After all, he doesn’t have much to bring to the table. However, after thinking about it a little bit more I realized that he actually has a hell of an edge: he’s still got that crystal in his ship. The same crystal he’s been using to build his own ships, which may be similar to the lions of Voltron.

In a previous article, I predicted that Lotor may use the crystal as a bargaining chip during his discussion with the paladins. But now I’m leaning toward the idea that he’s not only going to use it to bargain, also to enhance the normal powers of Voltron. The newest line of Voltron toys gives us a look at the new lions that are “based on a new look in the series” – could it be possible that this “new look” is an effect of whatever Lotor’s crystal does to Voltron?

This is all speculation, but I do think something along those lines could be possible.  Zarkon knows how Voltron and it lions work but adding an unknown variable into this fight would give everyone an advantage over him. As I’ve said in the past, Lotor is a man of opportunity and cunning. Zarkon destroyed his chance to create his own future within the Galra Empire so it would make sense for Lotor to essentially say “f*ck it” and just kill the issue at the root. By literally “combining forces” with Voltron, Lotor could take down his father’s empire AND establish himself as a more benevolent force in the universe.

I think that this season will push Lotor from villain to anti-hero. He is going to be a major focal point for the season, and his actions are going to be a huge influence on the outcome of the war. I. Am. PUMPED.
