Everyone’s favorite cigarette smoking, trench coat wearing, demonologist is returning to the live-action Arrowverse. Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that Matt Ryan will be returning as John Constantine for the first time since his single episode appearance in 2015 with Arrow’s fourth season.
The Hellblazer himself will show up in the third season’s ninth and tenth episodes. Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter about John Constantine’s role, Phil Klemmer—The EP of Legends Of Tomorrow—teased that his appearance will involve a revisitation of the finale of season 4 of Arrow (and the events following), a confrontation with this season’s Big Bad Mallus, some hot sex on The Waverider, and Damien Darhk. Klemmer teased that tonally the arc will be “The Exorcist meets One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” The episode(s) will also feature an exorcism in a mental institution, and will take place chronologically after Constantine’s appearance on Arrow.
If his appearance in Legends of Tomorrow isn’t enough to satisfy your Constantine craving, I guess this is a good time to remind you that CW Seed has a brand new animated series coming in 2018 with Matt Ryan returning to voice the character. Sadly, an official date has yet to be released. In the meantime you can watch/re-watch the first and only season of Constantine here.
Maybe if Matt Ryan’s two episode stint goes well, we could get more of our trench coach wearing Hellblazer in the future. Who knows, he could even hypothetically join the team down the line. I feel that if anyone deserved a seat at the Waverider from the beginning, it was the displaced John Constantine.
