The Legends were back at it last week, trying to locate the final piece of the Spear of Destiny. Their time travels have taken them to the far-flung future and the medieval past but this time they went beyond even that: to the moon.
With Rip firmly in command of his faculties once more, the team journeys to the last place he left the last piece of the Spear: NYC 1965 in the very capable hands of JSA Commander Henry Haywood (Nate’s grandfather). Unable to find him, the Legends brainstorm about his whereabouts. Pre-JSA, Henry was a successful test pilot and many test pilots in the 60’s were encouraged to apply to NASA as astronauts. Boom…Commander Haywood located. Houston 1970, here they come.
Not only do the Legends find Henry at NASA in 1970 Houston, he’s running mission control. Having worked his way up the command chain, Henry ensured that his piece of the Spear landed where it was almost totally inaccessible…the moon. When they all discover Eobard Thawne has infiltrated Apollo 13’s mission, Ray volunteers to retrieve the Spear in his Atom suit.
On Apollo 13, Thawne (masquerading with Jim Swigert’s face) knocks out the other astronauts with a drug-filled syringe. Ray gets the word from Captain Lance to save Apollo 13 and capture Eobard. Of course the lunar module is damaged, of course the Waverider AND jump ship are damaged and everyone ends up stranded in outer space.
At mission control, Professor Stein, Jax and Mick are hard at work trying to bring the team back without burning them up upon reentry into Earth’s atmosphere (well Stein and Jax are hard at work). Realizing Professor Stein doesn’t have a super computer to calculate the coordinates necessary to get the Legends home safely, Ray makes the calculated risk to use Eobard. Being from the 22nd century, he gives them the correct answer in 1.8 seconds. The solution for the Waverider’s safe entry is to blast the cargo hatch. The issue: whomever pull the lever gets blasted into outer space. Rip volunteers but it’s Commander Haywood who takes the charge. He accepts his destiny wasn’t to return to his wife and child in 1956 but to sacrifice himself so Nate-his GRANDSON-would be the man he is at present. It’s heartbreaking. It’s brave. It’s truly legendary.
Henry’s sacrifice opens up questions for Amaya. After Nate tells her vaguely about her fate, she has GIDEON show her future. The images of a burning Zambezi and her granddaughter Mari in foster care shock her. It’s a dangerous path, knowing one’s future, and Amaya just knocked the doors in to her own.
