Mindy Kaling sat down with Hulu CEO Mike Hopkins at the Cannes Lions Creativity Festival to talk The Mindy Project; *Hamilton Musical Voice* HIGHLIGHTS:
The current season of Mindy will end on a huge cliffhanger
She’s kicking around an idea for her first non-fiction book
Working with NBCU to develop shows she can be a producer on, wants to match writers with actors and be able to produce something completely different.
Kaling & CEO Mike Hopkins toasted to their first year together at Hulu, he showered her and the show with praise.
Hulu is moving into Live TV, with a mix of sports, news & entertainment content – he suggested a live TMP episode and Mindy quickly shut it down, laughing and saying it would be a disaster.
Kaling mentioned that brand integration is a great tool for the show and pays for some of the nice things they get to have on the show like Mindy’s Lexus and their ever present Windows phones & tablets.
Kaling says that she show has seeped into her life, the way Mindy Lahiri dresses has influenced her tremendously.
Comparing TMP to The Office, she states that Office was great and unglamorous on purpose while TMP is aspirational, you didn’t want to work at Dunder Mifflin (I sorta did) but you want to work at Shulman and wear her clothes and kiss her boyfriends.
Her first book essentially was born from interest in her twitter feed and she’s still very active on both Twitter & Instagram (almost 10 million followers combined) – she didn’t want to go into too much detail of herself as a brand so as not to sound like a lunatic (her words)
Mindy joked that this panel was all an elaborate ruse for their affair “he’s a very handsome CEO, we’re in France, it’s good”
