S5E8 “Homeward Bound”: Everyone is falling apart just in time for the season finale
SHOSH IS BAAAAACCKKKKKKK!
The show starts with her immediately over New York. As her shirt says she’s totally in a “Je Ne Sais Blah” place in her life.
Shosh isn’t the only one of the crew that is stumbling to their bottom, this episode. All the girls are. This episode continues the streak of amazing episode this season. After the title card we start with the on-the-rocks Hannah and Fran. Well Hannah is the one that has never been completely stable with the relationship, while Fran chugged along. This isn’t to say he’s the prefect guy (he’s boring and controlling of Hannah in a very Republican way), but he isn’t oblivious to their problems. Regardless, he puts Hannah in a “house-car” and they start on a whirlwind trip. They get all the way to upstate New York. Hannah, clad in cowboy boots and pajamas, breaks up with Fran. She’s childish and annoying (I mean it’s Hannah). After she stops running from him, Fran gives it to Hannah.
Now stranded, Hannah calls Jessa. Who doesn’t answer because why would she after last episode. Eventually Ray answers her plea for help, who just got a coffee food truck, and is a better friend than I would be for Hannah. As Hannah waits for Ray to get her, Adam is taking care of Sample.
How freaking cute is this situation?! Laird leaves Little Sample (“cause she’s sample sized”) with Adam after he finds a goodbye letter from Caroline under the fridge, and realizing Caroline isn’t coming back, he leaves. I can only assume he’s going to pick up more yarn and not agave (“fuck agave”). Jessa comes over to help with Adam, and is out of her element. When Adam gives her Sample to hold cause he needs to pee:
While Jessa tries to acclimate to childcare, Shosh is struggling to acclimate to the grey-toned harshness of New York. Ray shows up to pick up Hannah off the side of the road and things take a turn for the Hannah. After Ray tells her to follow her insticts, she starts to give Ray some thank-you head. Officially the cringiest sex scene in the series, ahead of the high-school grave yard thigh fuck. Lena Dunham said that filiming this was the most awkward for her, and the trick to giving fake head is to suck your thumbs. So that’s a fun tip for all those actors out there. This ill-fated car-head leads to Ray driving off the road and tipping his $600 $50000 dollar truck over. Hannah is stuck again. She calls Jessa and this time Jessa answers. Instead of asking her for a ride she asks Jessa if she’s fucking Adam. Jessa says yes, and Hannah hangs up. Jessa goes off and starts to talk about how Hannah makes it all about her, and Adam is having none of it. He shuts her down, and then Sample spits up on Jessa, and Jessa freaks out. The camera follows her as she goes to the bathroom and asks Adam to help, but to no avail. We pan over to Adam as he stands calmly with Sample and lays down the line of the night:
Marnie is starting on her difficult path of having a working relationship with Desi, but not a romantic one. While Shosh is hitting her new rock-bottom, after accidentally-on-purpose running into her ex at his sushi place. Shosh and her ex have a funny spar about the size of her saki, and they end further apart than when they started. While Hannah is about to restart her own perspective on life in New York. She gets in a car with Huck Hector. Hector turns out to be a decent guy, regardless of the gun in the back seat, and forcing Hannah to pee in an empty tea jug. We find out that he’s getting away from his abusive ex- girlfriend and has never seen the city. As they approach the city Hector gets so excited, and he starts talking about seeing Les Mis and getting a portrait. Hannah’s suggestion is that “there’s a lot of good pizza.” When put with a person that is as un-jaded about New York as Hector, Hannah comes off as suburban housewife (”it’s a nice place to live”). Then Hector says why Hannah was in New York in the first place.
The credits song plays (on point as always) and we end the episode ready for the crew to start over, and begin the next leg of their journey. Which is coming up sooner than I expected. NEXT WEEK IS A TWO PART SEASON FINALE 😫
I wasn’t ready, but I’m so ready. Let’s see how this amaze-balls season ends!
