In tonights recap, we feel feelings for Greg and Darryl, realize Paula might need to establish some boundaries, want to smack Josh across the head for being a dummy, and lastly want to give current & little Rebecca the biggest hug in existence to make her pain go away. Let’s do this!
Last week, Rebecca had all kinds of realizations and then ran off to a plane without telling anyone where she was actually going. I was of the half-correct opinion that she was headed to New York to visit her mom while Paula was convinced she was in Hawaii with Josh. In actuality, we find out quickly enough that she wants to move back to New York for good, having even gotten her old job back. We learn all this because she’s telling Dr. Akopian about her current situation. At the Key Ceremony, she basically realized her life is a pile of garbage and turds and made another rash decision to run away. Dr. Akopian then reminds her of the time that Paula said she was a “put-together-er”. Then we’re all like wait Dr. A how did you know that you weren’t there & Becks never came to therapy. This is when we discover that she is in fact a Dream Ghost! Rebecca took “SO MANY” sleeping pills with a Bloody Mary and is fast asleep, snoring and grunting, and all this is happening in her head.
After the amazing musical number featuring Dr. A & Ricki Lake AND Amber Riley; Dr. DreamGhostAkopian wants to go where the pain is so we visit a memory from Rebecca’s puberty days. They watch as little Rebecca, played to PERFECTION by Ava Acres, surprises her dad in Santa Fe for Spring Break. She begs him not to tell her mom who has no idea she’s not at summer camp. I’m convinced this kid is a genius because she forged camp forms and bought plane tickets under a pseudonym all to hang out with her dad. He acts super happy to see her and they make all kinds of plans for the next of the week. The next day, Lil’ Becca made pancakes for her dad & just as they’re about to sit down and have breakfast her mom shows up. Big Becks (I’m bad at nicknames) chimes in to say that her mom ruined everything by making her leave her dad who loved her and wanted her to stay. Dr. Akopian makes her watch the rest of the scene, that she wasn’t privy too as a child. This is where she hears that her dad actually called her mom to come get her because he didn’t want to have her around and that her mom played the bad cop to protect her from her fathers abandonment. Dr. A showed her that last memory to make her realize that people do love her, her mom basically sacrificed their relationship to protect her image of her dad. But this doesn’t land with Rebecca. She says a mothers love is the bare minimum and all that memory did was show her that her dad was worst than she thought and now she has to be nicer to her mom (booo!)
Since that didn’t work, we’re going to Harvard where Rebecca was briefly in a Moby Dick musical. This particular moment helps us realize that she almost always makes the wrong choice when men are involved; there’s a nice guy in the play who seems to genuinely care about her and her opinions but she sleeps with the Tom Cruise looking director who is also sleeping with all the other fishes. But that’s not even the lesson here, it’s just a parallel that basically foreshadows the current Josh/Greg thing. The notable thing is that she ends up quitting this thing that she loves because of another garbage guy even though she loved it and music is something that to this day helps her make sense of her life. Dr. A wants to tell her how important it is to follow her passions and change her life for herself, not for other people’s expectations. This also gave way for one of my favourite meta moments, Rebecca fully acknowledging that she creates musical numbers in her head in many situations.
Before we get to the last memory Dreambecca got to see, we have to talk about everything that’s been going on in West Covina! Paula got Rebecca’s couch back for her (with a newly added suspicious stain that I’m pretty sure the gross buyer guy left on it…) She was telling the movers all about how Rebecca was her best friend, which made me want to hug Mrs. Hernandez who looked a little saddened by the whole thing. Paula then had Mrs. Hernandez tell Darryl she was sick and decided to just hang out Chez Rebecca – in her bathrobe. As she was looking at some pictures Rebecca had developped of her & Josh (almost creepy/stalkery), JOSH KNOCKED AT THE DOOR! He says he’s been trying to get in touch with Rebecca with no luck while Paula is super confused because if Becks isn’t in Hawaii with Josh then where is she?! While they’re trying to figure this out, Darryl shows up because he’s also been frantically looking for Rebecca who never showed up for work (duh, she’s on a plane). A little bit later, GREG SHOW UP! Darryl had texted him that it was an emergency. But of course, because he’s Angry Greg, he acts all cool and says she’s unpredictable and flighty so she’s probably fine. They eventually get into her email and see that she had lined up an apartment and job in NYC. They all start to panic about the fact that she just left them without a word.
Dreambecca shows up right around this time. She’s been brought here to realize that though perhaps she doesn’t have someone special to handle her blue clit for her, she has man people who care for her and love her. All her SoCal friends are in her house, talking about what good things she’s brought into their lives. She helped Darryl change his life and realize he was bisexual, she got Josh his dream job at Alohas & she helped Paula save her marriage. Greg says that she’s brought him nothing but trouble but we all know that isn’t true and he’s just being his grumpy self. To prove this to Rebecca, doctor Dreamghostakopian tells her to look at his phone, where she sees that before he knew she was safe, he’d called all the area hospitals heart eyes.
The plane finally lands in NYC, Rebecca wakes up and she’s had this epiphany, while Dr. Akopian and the other dream ghosts, understandably, have no idea what she’s going on about when she thanks them and says they should get dental. Then she gets on another plane and travels back to West Covina because she finally gets back home, where everyone is trying to figure out how to get her back. Paula takes Josh aside, shows him the pictures Becks had developed to make him understand how deeply in love with him she is. When Rebecca shows up Greg makes some snide remark and wants to leave, but Rebecca grabs and hugs him super tight. He makes a goofy dorky face and leaves. My sweet angel Darryl hugs her and gets all emotional, then also leaves, presumably to go hang out with WiJo. Then Paula takes off, still in nothing but a bathrobe. Finally Josh and Rebecca are face to face, Josh has seen all the pictures and he asks her point blank if she’s in love with him. REBECCA MAKES A FACE AND THEN THE EPISOE ENDS!!!!
GUYS! WILL SHE TELL HIM EVERYTHING?! OR WILL SHE MAKE UP SOME BS EXCUSE ABOUT A BIRTHDAY SCRAPBOOK?! I guess we’ll find out this week in “Josh’s Sister Is Getting Married!”
I give this episode 4 nerd glasses because WiJo and Heather were missing and also I’m saving the 5 glasses perfection rating for a real special moment so it doesn’t lose its credibility. See you at 8pm PST on twitter and then back here next week for my feels-laden recap!
