The sixth episode of season eight is one of the few times we see the struggles of being a companion of The Doctor. It was very refreshing to see the downside of traveling with a time traveler. We get to see Clara balance having a new lover, working, and going on adventures in the TARDIS. As we saw this nice change of pace, we also saw The Doctor deal with being surrounded by humans and going undercover. Seeing The Doctor act normal always makes for great scenes and witty one liners. This episode also finally had me warming up to Pink. I had mixed feelings towards him in the beginning, but seeing him interact with both Clara and The Doctor made him grow on me. I did feel that the alien plot was really just a subplot for the interaction of The Doctor and Pink.
I think this was a character episode which really paid off in the end. We saw strong relationship development between Clara and Pink.
Unfortunately the monster of the episode seemed a bit flat. I never felt that The Doctor and Clara were in any real danger. This monster was a definite step down from the Teller alien from “Time Heist”. However I’m very happy to see that we got a bit more of the Promised Land and Missy who looked more sinister than before in her brief shot. It reassured me that she will be a darker villain than we once thought. So far I felt this is the weakest episode so far but I still enjoyed it overall.
