RJ WRITING INK Gushes over The Female Malfoy Trend
Guys, don’t look now, but I think that a top contender for best girl of 2026 is going to be from a meme. And that meme is all about a genderbent version of Draco Malfoy, (I call her her Galfoy) and I am ALL FOR IT!
If you guys have been on social media over the last few weeks, you may seen the term “Malfoid” and images of a female version of Draco Malfoy, the infamous rival to Harry Potter, floating around. It all started when artist Redteneri posted this drawing of a female Malfoy (her first name is up for debate) teasing an unseen Harry. Now, genderbent versions of fictional characters isn’t new. People have been doing it for as long as the concept of fandoms has existed. I’ve even written some stories about genderbent versions of characters. But that initial post would end up striking a chord with the Internet. At the time of this writing, it’s become the next viral meme of 2026, for reasons both good and bad. Which I would very much like to go over, because it’s the only way to get it out of my head!
I’m Calling her “Mal” or “Galfoy.” Or “Draconia Malfoy”
First, we need to make one thing clear: we need a better term for this than “Malfoid.” Most people don’t know this, but it stems from an insulting term used by certain groups online. Those groups are incels who are upset about not being able to find love despite wanting it. Apparently, the original slang word is meant to dehumanize women, which does not help people’s chances of finding love. The fact that people have used it without understanding its original meaning has upset many people, and I think more people should be aware of it. Henceforth, I will use the term “Galfoy” instead, and I hope to get that going.
Secondly, Galfoy has taken off as a meme because of anime. In anime, there’s a character archetype known among fans as tsunderes. A tsundere is a character, often female, who starts off harsh and abrasive toward others, making them seem unpleasant. Once we get to know them, though, we see that beneath that prickly exterior lies a big, gooey heart. And while some people find them annoying, they’re one of the most popular archetypes with anime fans, myself included. And given how arrogant and haughty Malfoy is in the series, Galfoy would definitely qualify as a tsundere. And with that comes the opportunity to do things with the character that Rowling never did.
Great Example of Enemies to Lovers done Right
Everyone knows about the famous rivalry between Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy. The two of them spent the majority of the series hating and rejecting each other for their beliefs. While Draco would ultimately turn over a new leaf, Rowling missed out by not showing his change of heart to us in the books, let alone the movies. Do you know how awesome it would have been if Draco had decided to stand alongside Harry and strike Voldemort down? Us anime fans live for that rivals-turned-allies stuff! Not only do fans think that we would get that with Galfoy, but many think we would’ve gotten something even more amazing: a better love interest.
Step away from the keyboard. Let me explain.
Look, I know that we could’ve gotten better romance in Harry Potter, at least regarding Harry’s love life. And for the record, I have nothing against Harry and Ginny getting together. I think it’s sweet that Harry married his best friend’s sister. Though, I didn’t read or watch Harry Potter for the romance. I did it to see Harry beat the pumpkin guts out of Umbridge and Magical H**ler. But after looking over what the fandom has done with Galfoy and where they unilaterally agree the subplot would go, I can say that Rowling missed out. She missed out on writing one of the greatest romances in all of fantasy.
WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN
Think about it, and I mean really think about it. Harry and Galfoy would start off as enemies and rivals, as they do in canon. Harry would be put off by her bigotry toward Muggle-borns and her haughty attitude, while she would be incensed by how famous he was and by his rejection of her (potentially) genuine offer of friendship. They’d be rivals for most of the early books, but as she sees all the things Harry does, Galfoy’s attitude starts to soften. She could develop an unspoken respect for the boy who lived and see him as worthy of being her rival. More importantly, she could see the genuine friendships he had with Ron and Hermione and feel envious. Because, let’s face it, Crabbe and Goyle weren’t Draco’s friends; they were just sycophants. And through it all, Galfoy would begin to question her family’s beliefs.
And then comes the Yule Ball. In canon, it’s best remembered as the moment when the shipping between Ron and Hermione really sets sail. Harry, meanwhile, had to deal with the fact that his then-crush went with Cedric. But instead of going with Parvati, fans are having him go with Galfoy. The reason why is either because she offers to go but with the “excuse” of not wanting him to embarrass Hogwarts, or because Fred and George bet that she’d say no (one comic had meant it for Ron.) Either way, they grow closer together. Which only makes what happens in the latter half of the series all the more heartbreaking to watch.
I haven’t seen yet how fans would want their fifth year to go, but given what happens in Order of the Phoenix, and what Draco does, I can imagine a rough idea. Maybe Galfoy would join Umbridge’s side because she was told to by her “friends” or family. Or maybe knowing her dad is a Death Eater makes Harry wary of her, which upsets her enough that she reverts to her initial “tsun” attitude.
And then we get to the moment that, so far, fans agree would turn this subplot into a tragedy worthy of Shakespeare: the duel in the bathroom.
THIS. WOULD HAVE BEEN. EPIC
By this point in the story, Malfoy had been forced to become a Death Eater and given the impossible task of killing Dumbledore. As we saw in the books and movie, Draco was terrified and losing his mind over this. He knew that if he didn’t do it, he and his family would all be killed by Voldemort. At the same time, though, Draco never had it in him to kill. And regardless of their animosity, it’s clear that we’re meant to see what Harry does with Sectumsempra was going too far. The problem is that while we’re supposed to feel sorry for Malfoy, his character so far makes it hard for some people to sympathize with him.
Now replace Malfoy with Galfoy, and see just how easier it is to feel sorry for the character.
From what I’ve seen, the fans agree that Galfoy wouldn’t even have it in her to attack Harry. She just wants to drive him away to protect him, but she hesitates to even attack him. Harry doesn’t, and like in the canon, he’s horrified by what he ended up doing. To twist the knife even further, fans have Galfoy ask Harry if he hates her that much, which leaves Harry absolutely destroyed. By the time Snape found them, he would be in tears and begging him to help her.
Compare what I just summarized to what we got in the actual story, and how they made you feel. Thanks to this one change, one of the darkest moments in the story, a moment that Harry already regretted, and it becomes the worst mistake he’s ever made. Readers and moviegoers would’ve been in tears over seeing the two rivals turned frenemies almost end their relationship in a bloodbath. That would only make the moment when Galfoy leaves with the Death Eaters all the more heartbreaking for Harry. Not only had he lost his greatest mentor that night, but he was powerless to stop the girl he’d begun to care so much about from leaving. That is what we fans call PEAK.
Way Cooler Final Stand
Regardless of whatever happens next, though, fans all agree on how things will end. When the final battle between Harry and Lord Voldermort comes around, he wouldn’t be facing Tom alone. Instead of running away or simply sitting out the final battle, Galfoy would stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Harry and help him strike down Voldemort for good.
The final duel between Harry and Voldemort was already plenty epic (especially in the movie). But this? This makes so much more sense for us fans! One of the main themes of Harry Potter is that love is the greatest magic of all. Harry’s journey was never lacking in it, as he had it in the form of his friends, found family, and the sacrifices his parents made for him. But when it comes to romantic love, the thing that made Snape turn on Voldemort and gave Harry the chance to defeat Voldemort, the ending doesn’t give it the attention it deserves. Galfoy makes it make sense. Her decision, the decision to reject everything her family believed in, everything Voldemort and his bloodline stood for, would’ve been the stuff of legends!
Read the Female Malfoy Fanfictions
I have been into fanfiction for the better part of seven years. I have seen many truly amazing stories in that time. But rarely have I ever seen a fan-based concept be so unilaterally considered as “better than canon.” I think that’s the highest honor a fanwork can get, and regardless of its name and the controversy, I think Galfoy fits the bill. I have rarely ever seen a fanwork go so mainstream so fast, and it’s pretty much reignited interest in the franchise. That’s more than I think can be said about the HBO remake that’s coming out soon! And even after the initial hype fades, I don’t think Galfoy is going to go away. In fact, I know it won’t.
Believe it or not, there are already people out there hard at work making fanfics based on Galfoy. There’s even one writer, Guardbro, who’s taking on the absolutely insane challenge or rewriting the books to include Galfoy. He’s already well into the first one, and from what I hear, is working on the second. Even I haven’t found the strength to do something like that! Plus, I’ve already seen plenty of videos and webcomics playing around with the concept with views in the tens of thousands. I know that some of them are made with AI, but this is one of the rare moments where I don’t care. That’s how much this meme has touched my heart.
Guys, for the love of all that is holy, go enjoy this meme while it lasts. Years from now, I’m hoping that it is studied by people for academic purposes, because it might deserve it!
