Have you ever wanted to experience a good story and characters without having to watch for dozens of episodes? Well, I’ve got three more anime for you that you can finish in a day. One of them you can even watch in less than an hour! And the best part? They are all top tier shows, with incredible characters that match some of the longest running anime out there.

See You Tomorrow At The Food Court

This anime lives off of the feeling of hanging out with your friends and talking about whatever comes to mind. The main characters Wada and Yamamoto attend different high schools, but meet up at the food court after school to hang out. They’re a case of looks being deceiving. Wada’s prim appearance hides her laziness and love for getting in online arguments over her favorite gacha game. And Yamamoto’s tan skin and blonde hair hide her calm and collected personality, as well as her love of urban myths.

Wada and Yamamoto have excellent chemistry together. Whenever Wada says something stupid about the characters in her gacha game, Yamamoto is always there for a snappy comeback. When Yamamoto gets too tired of being around Wada, she’ll meet someone that makes her realize she enjoys Wada’s company. The dialogue feels like something two real-life friends would say to each other, and that’s what makes the anime so enjoyable to watch.

Ping Pong The Animation

Have you ever scoffed at the idea of professional ping pong? What could be so exciting about hitting a ball between two paddles? Well, by combining in-depth character studies with out of this world animation that pushes the boundaries of what animation can do. The main characters Peco and Smile are best friends with very different personalities. As they get older and join their high school’s ping pong team, the two come to understand why they love ping pong in the first place, and what playing it means to them.

Peco loves ping pong and wants to be the best, while Smile just views it as a way to kill time. But as the two attend competitions, Smile gets exponentially better, while Peco struggles more and more. Peco and Smile deal with frustration, anger, and the joy of the sport. And the production renders those emotions on full display. In many respects, the characters look ugly. But it reflects how intense playing ping pong is. The camera zooms and flies to follow the ball, and you can see the muscles tense as the players use every ounce of strength to return the serve. Ping Pong the Animation is both a character study and sports anime, one that looks at why people put themselves on the line for their passions.

Milky Subway: The Galactic Limited Express

Milky Subway does more with its story and characters in 30 minutes than some anime accomplish in four hours. The premise of the show is that a six member group of robots and aliens have to clean a train for community service after committing petty crimes. The train accidentally takes off, and the ragtag group has to find a way to stop the train. This locked-room scenario forces everyone to work together if they want to escape, and as a result they learn about each other’s pasts and that they’re more than their appearances.

The show is able to accomplish this by making every second of screen-time count. Establishing shots are two to three seconds at most. Dialogue goes by fast and snappy, and characters frequently talk over each other. It’s very different from the normal anime, where characters go on monologues all the time. And the characters have layers to their personalities, which comes across through top tier 3D animation and character designs that show off just as much personality as the dialogue. If you want a fast paced and witty ensemble comedy, you can’t do much better than this anime.
