Send word across the Four Nations: the Avatar has returned…to San Diego Comic Con!

The last few months have been a trying time for fans of Nickelodeon’s famed Avatar franchise. First, there was the news that the upcoming movie about Aang as an adult was getting shunted to Paramount+. Then some jerk proceeded to leak said film online (and I hope he ROTS IN PRISON) But despite all of this, things might be looking up for Avatar fans. By the time you’re reading this, Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender will already be out on Paramount+ (and I will be reviewing it), but this year at SDCC, fans didn’t just get to celebrate the movie. We got to see a look at the future of the franchise, and it’s coming sooner than we thought.

So many Members of the Avatar Family

The panel itself is moderated by none other than Janet Varney. For those who don’t know, she was the voice of Avatar Korra in The Legend of Korra, and someone whose autograph proudly hangs on my wall. The actors who voice Team Avatar in the movie were also present, as well Dave Bautista, the voice of Tagah. Sadly, Steven Yuen, the voice of Zuko and a veteran of Avatar (he played Wan, the first Avatar) and more popularly known as the voice of Invincible, was not present. However, it doesn’t seem like that was too much of a problem for the panel, as there was plenty to enjoy.

According to eyewitnesses, the trailer for the film was replayed for those present. Which is fitting, considering how SDCC was supposed to have an early showing of Avatar Aang: the Last Airbender the next day. It seems that the majority of the panel was focused on the movie, and it dropped some cool things. For example, the film is introducing an entirely new writing system for the franchise, known as Avatarian. We even got images of what it looks like and everything. I’ve always found that some of the deepest world-building possible has to be that of an original writing system, you know? In addition to that, we also got a look at some of the concept art for the film, and it looks pretty cool.

The real draw, though, was the announcement about the next chapter of the franchise, Avatar: Seven Havens. And more importantly, we got a release date and our first trailer.

Seven Havens Looks Awesome

Avatar: Seven Havens will be a sequel to The Legend of Korra, taking place decades after the events of that show. Unfortunately, it also takes place in the aftermath of the apocalypse, because the world is a mess! According to the backstory, some cataclysm almost destroyed both the Human and Spirit Worlds, leaving both in ruins. As a result, humanity is left clinging to life in the titular Seven Havens, and the Avatar is feared and hated by the world. And…it’s not hard to see why, given how Korra might have gone out.

The trailer gives us a brief look at how Korra might have met her end, and it doesn’t look good. I hate to say it, but she looks more than a little evil in appearance. The only good thing worth mentioning is how she’s sporting some gray hair. That means that she at least got to live a decently long life before the end. And I hope this means that none of the cast from the original show was alive to see what happens.

And for the record, I will not hate on Korra and I know there’s more to the story than what’s at face value.

Seven Havens is the most anime out of the Avatar franchise to date

As for the world of Seven Havens, though, it feels like the most mystical and otherworldly out of the entire franchise. Given how otherworldy it already is, that’s saying something. But the animation has to be the biggest draw to this show. Avatar has always been a fusion of eastern and western animation styles, but this is the most overtly anime the franchise has been (not counting the new film). And I love it!

The good news is that we don’t have to wait long to see what happens, with Seven Havens coming out October 9th on Paramount+. The bad news? Apparently they’re dropping all the episodes at once. Which I think is a massive mistake and just shows how little Paramount seems to care about this juggernaut. I hope for everyone’s sake that we are wrong about this, because Paramount is going to lose out on a lot of subscribers!

But that is everything about the panel that I managed to dig up in the hours afterward. Hopefully, by the time you read this, my review for Avatar Aang won’t be far behind! TEAM AVATAR IS BACK, BABY!
