Paramount to Release Avatar Aang: the Last Airbender Movie on July 25th, 2026
Well, well, well. Look who decided to admit defeat, Paramount. Of course, none of this would have happened had you just released Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender in theaters like you had promised. But at least we’re getting the movie sooner rather than later!
In the 21 years since its premiere on Nickelodeon, Avatar: The Last Airbender has become a global phenomenon. It was one of the most popular shows in the 2000s, got a sequel in the 2010s, and thanks to COVID keeping everyone isolated, hit new levels of fame starting in 2020. Needless to say, when fans heard that they’d be getting an animated film continuing the story of the original show, we were over the moon. Unfortunately, Paramount didn’t respect Avatar as much as we did and planned to drop the movie on Paramount+ this October. But karma can be cruel and unyielding, and a few months ago, a hacker broke into their servers and proceeded to leak the entire movie online.
Good going, Paramount!
Did Paramount try to sneak us?
I already wrote an entire piece condemning the hacker who spoiled the movie sometime ago, and my opinion still stands. Their actions disrespected the fans, the people who worked on the film, and most of all, the franchise itself, and they deserve to rot in prison. At the same time, this only happened because Paramount foolishly thought that an animated Avatar film wouldn’t do well at the box office. Judging by how fast the footage of the film spread around and the praise it garnered, it’s clear they made a huge mistake. And now, it’s time to pay the piper in the only way possible: releasing the film now.
I don’t know where they first started, but about a month ago, a rumor went around saying that Paramount would be dropping Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender late July, 2026, a full three months before its original release date. Which makes perfect sense. With the movie already out in the wild, they have no choice but to release it so they can save face. However, if they were hoping that this could quietly swept under the rug, they were wrong once again. Because at the time of this writing, the trailer for the film is trending near the top on YouTube. And it deserves it, because it is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!
Team Avatar is Back!
I could spend an inordinate amount of timing fanboying over the god-tier animation for this film, but I’m not going to. Instead, I want to talk about what appears to be the plot, and how it reflects the story of Aang himself.
It’s been years since the end of the Hundred-Year War, and the members of Team Avatar are all young adults in their 20s. The world is at peace and they’re all celebrated as heroes for saving it. Yet despite everything good, Aang is still hung up over the fact that he’s the last of the Air Nomads, and that if he dies, his culture may die with him. All of that changes, though, when he and his friends discover Tagah, an ancient airbender who, like him, was frozen in ice for thousands of years.
As you can see in the trailer, Aang is thrilled to know that there’s another airbender left in the world. More so when he Tagah reveals a mystical artifact said to have the power to save the Air Nomads culture from extinction. However, it ends up being too good to be true, as this leads Aang and Team Avatar into a new conflict that could destroy everything.
Why is Avatar Aang Not in Theaters?
I’m just going to come out and say it: this film is going to be too awesome to put into words. The few leaks that I had seen of Avatar Aang had some of the best animation I’ve seen in years. If Paramount had released it in theaters, it could’ve made a bundle of dough for them. The popcorn buckets alone would’ve been fought over online! I honestly don’t know why they decided to move it to streaming, and most of the comments are saying the same thing. It could be one of the best movies of the year, and I’m hoping it becomes as popular as K-Pop: Demon Hunters was last year.
For the record, this doesn’t make up for what Paramount did. Not even close. That hacker might have leaked the movie, but it was Paramount that created this scenario, and now everyone has suffered for it. It’s going to take a long time for them to regain the trust of the fans, and they’re going to have to keep doing right by Avatar. If not, then I’m sure another company would be happy to adopt the franchise. At least Netflix is trying to do right by it!
