To many players’ surprise, World of Warcraft Midnight has been an overwhelming success despite some questionable development decisions like removing addons, making difficult content easier, and more. Midnight has introduced a variety of new content that provide fun alternative outlets for gearing up characters and collecting new cosmetics. Path 12.0.5 has just been released with even more new content and collectables but has received a bad rap due to its poor release. Let’s break it all down.
On April 21, 2026, WOW patch 12.0.5 was released onto live servers for millions of players to enjoy. However, in the state it was released, it was not enjoyable. First, many players are still finishing the season one content, like finishing up raid progression or reaching a certain mythic plus score. The release of this patch felt a little too soon for the maximum number of players to appreciate. Second, the patch was riddled with issues that severely impacted all aspects of the game to the point where it was nearly unplayable for some players. It was so bad that the developers had to publicly apologize, saying the release was not “up to their standards.” While most of the major issues have been fixed, it was effectively several days of wasted subscription time for many players. Given that the release felt rushed, and no one was asking for new content when they were still working on the old, this is a massive mistake that could have been avoided by holding the release of the patch for a couple more weeks.
Poor release aside, there was a lot of new content that was dropped with patch 12.0.5. Most important to players is the new gearing system. The Nebulous Voidforge allows players to target loot they need every week at the maximum item level possible. Then every three weeks, players can choose select items to upgrade past the maximum item level. There have been bonus rolls systems like this in the past, but none guaranteed gear like this one. This new system is huge becoming more powerful to tackle more difficult content or for gearing up other characters.
In theme with the story, Void Assaults have begun appearing across the Midnight zones. Broken into Void Strikes and Void Incursions, these new open world objectives are fast ways to get quick pieces of gear, mounts, pets, and other cosmetics. Story-wise, it further immerses players into the idea that the main antagonist is building up power and corrupting the Azeroth with her new powers.
Ritual Sites are in the same vein as Void Assaults, but open world objectives. Instead, they are instanced challenges with scaling levels of difficulty (like delves that were introduced about two years ago) that provide similar rewards to the Void Assaults. These ritual sites also follow the same story implications as Void Assaults.
There are also two new non-combat content options. The first is Décor Duels having to do with the player housing system. This is effectively a hide-and-seek system that groups of friends or guilds can play in their neighborhoods. There is one player that is “it” and all other players can transform into random housing decorations and hide. The “it” player has to find these fake decorations until everyone is found or time is up. This content is basically the same as Gary’s Mod’s “Prop Hunt” that was extremely popular in the early 2010s.
The second piece of new non-combat content is called “Abyss Anglers,” which is an unprecedented addition to the WOW fishing system that has not been iterated on since its release in 2004. Abyss Anglers is spearfishing that gives players a more interactive way to fish in the game. This provides the same rewards as regular fishing, and more.
All of this new content comes with new achievements and collectable items. Now more than ever, there is a ton to do and collect in World of Warcraft.
