While a little late to the party, I thought now was a great time to talk about the second half of Wednesday season two, following its finale last month. With it being October and prime time for all things spooky, let’s unravel the mysteries revealed in the second half and what’s to come for season three!
Beware now, for I’ll be getting into spoilers for season two.
Wednesday and Enid
We’ll start with the heart of the show; the dynamic of the two polar opposite girls. They’re at odds this season with Wednesday constantly undermining Enid, and Enid not taking it lying down. They have a great sixth episode where due to Wednesday’s arrogance and Enid interrupting a ritual, the consequence was them switching bodies. They had to reverse it by sunrise or they died.
I just want to say that Jenna Ortega and Emma Myers did an incredible job playing as each other. It’s really easy for the swapping bodies plot lines to fall flat, but they both really nailed each other’s personalities. It helps that Myers originally auditioned for the role of Wednesday and Jenna naturally has a more bubbly personality like Enid.
In the story however, they eventually break the curse by learning more about each other. They come to appreciate their good qualities instead of focusing on each other’s weaknesses.
This season between them ends with Enid having transformed into an Alpha wolf during the full moon. Since she’s an Alpha, she’s at risk of not changing back into a human and being killed by other werewolves. She made the choice to change when Wednesday is buried alive and she can dig faster to save her. She then runs away. We leave off with Wednesday traveling with Uncle Fester to find her. Maybe in the next season, we can look forward to seeing their relationship improve even more. Wednesday can continue to open up to Enid, and Enid will see that Wednesday does care for her.
The Tyler Plotline
This plot felt a little lackluster from season one’s finale and battle. But I believe it carried a heavier emotional battle. Tyler’s mom lied to him the entire time about getting rid of her Hyde powers and wants to save him instead. Tyler doesn’t want to lose his Hyde abilities and finds it the most free he’s ever been.
During the climax, the Addams family is rescuing Pugsley from being fried of his electric powers and killed. Wednesday chooses to free Tyler instead of killing him. They both don’t understand why she made the choice, leading me to believe that Wednesday still feels something for Tyler.
Tyler goes against his mom and Isaac, leading into a battle between the two Hyde. Ultimately his mom sacrifices herself. Tyler is now completely alone, having lost both parents.
In the end, a music teacher from Nevermore we see throughout the season with mysterious circumstances approaches him. She offers Tyler a chance to be with other Hydes like him in a pack. I can only hope that Tyler doesn’t deal with more nefarious people as despite what he’s done and his hatred to Wednesday, he’s been through a lot and just wants to be free. Perhaps he and Wednesday will be even now with her having freed him. Maybe he won’t hunt her down anymore.
The Addams Family Drama
Geez, the Addams couple, Morticia and Gomez, seemed to find themselves involved with murder often during their time at Nevermore. First, Morticia killed Garrett in season one and now they were involved with the death of Isaac Night… twice.
Anyway, Morticia and Wednesday were still at odds throughout the season, and it doesn’t seem like it improved much. Morticia gave Wednesday Aunt Ophelia’s book to get her abilities back, but they still seemed strained in the end.
And then there’s the deal with Grandmama. She’s been trying to distance Wednesday from the rest of the family, finding them similar to each other over Wednesday being an Addams. There finally seemed to be a fracture in their relationship when Grandmama insults Gomez, which Wednesday doesn’t stand for.
Then there’s the huge reveal that Aunt Ophelia is not dead, but trapped in Grandmama’s basement. She writes on the wall that Wednesday must die. Clearly, we will have a lot more family conflict to work through in the following season.
Also, the reveal that Thing was Isaac Night’s hand was crazy! It was funny to see him attack Isaac while still attached to him and then freeing himself.
The Morning Song Plotline
Finally, I’ll talk about what was probably my least favorite plot line of this season, which was the subplot with Bianca, her mom, and Principal Dort. Now I knew Dort was suspicious from the get go before he used Bianca. But, the final reveal just being that he wanted a lot of money and then flee the country felt a little weak for how much they’ve been building this up from season one. However, I suppose that’s just how cults work; the leaders always have an ulterior motive.
With Wednesday, Agnes, and others’ help, Bianca was able to siren song Dort into exposing his plot and he gets killed via Ajax turning him to stone and being crushed by the chandelier. It’s a spectacular death for a rather unspectacular character. The only good thing is that Principal Weems, who died in season one and became Wednesday’s spirit guide, was able to have her reputation saved like she wanted.
What To Look Forward To
There’s a lot of interesting setup for season three. Enid is near the Canadian border and Wednesday is tracking her down like she promised. I hope this will further strengthen their unlikely friendship. Tyler’s fate may lead to a Hyde pack, and I can only hope he finds a community there instead of something nefarious like he’s prone to.
Of course, we have Grandmama to contend with and the ultimate secret of having her own daughter locked away for reasons we don’t know yet. We’ll hopefully find out more context to this next season. Hopefully Wednesday can also fix her relationship with her mom, who she’s been at odds with the entire show so far.
Maybe Wednesday can also learn to open up more in general. She definitely has great difficulty with this and while Enid is a good first step, it would be nice to see her be more open to others like Agnes and her family.
I’m eager to see what else is in store for Wednesday and I look forward to see what these cliffhangers will lead to.
