For the third consecutive year, Fan Expo San Francisco brought the magic of pop culture to the Moscone Center West over Thanksgiving weekend. The convention has grown into a staple event for fans in the Bay Area, and despite some challenges this year, it still offered a memorable experience for fans of all ages filled with creativity, fandom, and community spirit.

Celebrity Contracts and the Reality of Scheduling

One of Fan Expo’s hallmark features has always been its star-studded lineup of celebrities, drawing fans eager to meet their heroes. This year’s initial guest list included major names such as Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things), Vincent D’Onofrio (Daredevil), and Linda Blair (The Exorcist). However, as with many conventions, the nature of celebrity appearance contracts makes last-minute cancellations a possibility.

Most celebrity contracts for events like Fan Expo include clauses allowing cancellations due to professional commitments, personal emergencies, or other unforeseen circumstances. With this convention falling on Thanksgiving weekend—a time when both personal and work commitments are high—the risk of scheduling conflicts increases. Fan Expo’s organizers worked tirelessly to fill gaps in the lineup, even securing additional appearances like Linda Blair as a replacement, though she, too, had to withdraw.

While the cancellations were disappointing, it’s worth noting that this is a common challenge in the convention world, not something unique to Fan Expo San Francisco. Given these complexities, the organizers have an opportunity to plan for contingencies in the future, such as overbooking guests to account for potential dropouts.

The Five-Year Contract: A Commitment to Community

Some fans have questioned why Fan Expo San Francisco continues to take place over Thanksgiving weekend, a notoriously busy time in the city. The answer lies in a five-year contract signed shortly after the pandemic. At a time when live events were struggling to return, Fan Expo committed to hosting its convention during this weekend to help revitalize the Moscone Center and bring fans back together safely.

While the timing has its challenges—especially with Black Friday and holiday travel congestion—the commitment reflects Fan Expo’s dedication to the community and its role in rejuvenating in-person events. With only two years left on the contract, there’s hope that future iterations might explore alternative dates to make the event even more accessible to fans and celebrities alike.

Guests Who Made the Event Shine

Despite the cancellations, many incredible guests attended and left fans with unforgettable experiences. Notable attendees included:

  • Jodi Benson, the beloved voice of Ariel from The Little Mermaid, who charmed fans with her warmth and stories about voicing the iconic Disney character.
  • Several Hazbin Hotel voice actors, who drew massive crowds of enthusiastic fans eager to meet the voices behind their favorite characters.
  • Talented comic book creators and artists, whose presence on the second floor of the convention created an intimate and inspiring space for fans to connect with the creative minds behind some of their favorite works.
  • The cast of CW’s The Flash and Superman & Lois were on hand for panels, autographs, and photos.

While the initial guest lineup may have changed, these stars and creators brought energy and excitement to the event, reminding fans that the magic of Fan Expo lies in more than just celebrity appearances.

The Convention Layout: A Multi-Level Celebration

Fan Expo San Francisco’s use of three levels at Moscone Center West created a dynamic and immersive experience. Each level was thoughtfully designed to cater to different aspects of fandom:

  • First Floor: A bustling hub of vendors, community zones, and food options. The community zone, often tucked away in past years, took center stage this time, offering interactive photo ops and family-friendly activities that delighted younger attendees. While the vendor area was packed, it showcased a fantastic array of merchandise.
  • Second Floor: The heart of creativity, featuring Artist Alley, comic book creators, and themed photo ops. The well-spaced layout allowed artists and creators to shine, while fans enjoyed photo ops inspired by Star Wars, Doctor Who, and a festive Christmas theme.
  • Third Floor: Dedicated to celebrity autographs and photographs, as well as the main theater for panels. While the layout caused some minor line confusion, it was clear which guests were the main attractions, and the energy here was palpable.

Opportunities for Growth

Fan Expo San Francisco has consistently improved year over year, and there’s plenty of room for further growth based on this year’s experience. Here are a few opportunities:

  1. Overbooking Guests: By scheduling a surplus of celebrities, the event could better account for inevitable cancellations, ensuring fans always have exciting experiences waiting for them.
  2. Extended Appearances: Encouraging celebrities to commit to multiple days would make the event more cost-effective and rewarding for fans traveling from out of town.
  3. Enhanced Refund Policies: Implementing flexible refund options for ticket holders when major cancellations occur could build trust and loyalty among attendees.

A Day of Fun for the Family

For our family, Fan Expo San Francisco 2024 was a special experience—it was my son Dash’s first-ever convention! We decided to attend on Friday, opting for a one-day visit due to the restructured schedule. While we originally planned to stay the whole weekend, we still made the most of our time, enjoying the vibrant atmosphere and activities. Dash loved exploring the photo ops and meeting the friendly creators in the community zone, and it was heartwarming to see how family-friendly the event remained.

Looking Ahead to 2025

While this year’s event may not have reached the heights of previous years, it still brought fans together to celebrate what they love most—fandom, creativity, and community. Fan Expo San Francisco has the foundation for something truly special, and with a few tweaks, it can recapture the magic that has made it a standout event in the Bay Area.

As we look forward to next year, we’re excited to see how Fan Expo builds on this year’s lessons to create an even better experience. With its commitment to fans and the local community, Fan Expo San Francisco continues to be a highlight of the holiday season, and we’re already counting down the days to 2025!
