The spooky season is upon us, and if you’re looking for horror anime to get into the spirit, here’s a list of shows fit for the season.
Promised Neverland
Growing up in an orphanage with multiple siblings was never a problem for Emma. The problem comes when a family adopts her sister. However, upon discovering her sister left her beloved item behind, Emma chased after her sister only to find a sinister truth that shatters her world. The game becomes survival as Emma and her siblings fight against the orphanage and world that herds them like free-range meat. Do not watch season 2, read it.
Devilman Crybaby
Learning demons are real shakes up Akira’s world, but when his childhood friend Ryo shows him proof, his life changes forever. Soon, the world discovers the existence of demons and chaos, depravity, and the indescribable follows. It is up to Akira to help humanity fight against demons. Unfortunately, he becomes a part of a much larger plot.
Higurashi
After moving to the quiet village of Hinamizawa, Keiichi meets four girls and joins their club. Life is peaceful until a photographer enters the village asking about a suspicious murder that happened in the town a few years ago. Suddenly, the town’s peaceful nature shifts into something dark. Intrigued, Keiichi investigates and finds secrets that change his life, for the worse.
Hellsing/ Hellsing Ultimate
This flashy action horror show follows Hellsing, an English organization created to destroy any supernatural forces that threaten the Queen and country. The series follows Alucard, a vampire who swore his loyalty to the family after losing a duel against Van Helsing. The central plot follows the Hellsing Organization as they clash against Millennium, a Nazi organization creating supernatural creatures to take over Europe.
Death Parade/ Death Billiards
This psychological horror anime and film explores the human condition. People awaken in an empty bar with a lone bartender awaiting them. Unaware of the circumstances leading them to the bar, the bartenders ask the people to play a game. As the players progress, they learn about the events that led them to the bar and seal their fates.
Zombie Land Saga
Not a fan of horror anime but like zombies and idols? Zombie Land Saga is the answer. The recently deceased Sakura is brought back to life by a very odd individual. Next thing she knows, she’s a part of an idol group filled with idols of the past. Their biggest issue? Keeping their zombie states covered up. This is easier said than done as limbs fly off bodies at inopportune moments. However, death can’t stop the girls of Franchouchou as they power through to achieve their dreams of being idols.
Junji Ito Collection
With the Uzumaki anime premiering this Fall, we cannot forget about the Junji Ito Collection. This episodic series adapts many of Junji Ito’s horror stories such as Tomie, Gentle Goodbye, and Greased. Each episode is filled with unsettling images, stories, and horrors perfect for a late-night scare.
Hell Girl

This series follows Ai Enma, the Hell Girl, as she answers the grievances of the people crying out to her for revenge, justice, or to settle petty squabbles.
