Blockbuster season is once again upon us and for over a decade now that means at least one new Marvel movie. While Dr. Strange 2 isn’t even out till May 6, Marvel is already drumming up hype for their next movie : Thor: Love and Thunder which comes out in July by releasing a teaser trailer. Here’s some observations and analysis after watching the minute and thirty second long
Song Choice: Marvel has become well known for their soundtracks, especially with the Guardians movies. Even the trailer for the last Thor movie Thor: Ragnarok featured Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin, so it’s no surprise they would use a popular song like “Sweet Child of Mine” by Guns N’ Roses. On the surface this just seems like a fun upbeat choice that maybe thematically ties into the movie, but could it be alluding to a plot point in the movie? In the wake of Endgame, Marvel seems to be building a Young Avengers team with the offspring of many avengers as well as characters like Kate Bishop and Ms. Marvel who look to be stepping in for the older Avengers taking more of a center stage in the MCU. Could the song choice be teasing that Thor has a son or daughter out there that could become a young avenger?
The Guardians of the Galaxy are featured pretty heavily: Thor was last seen at the end of Avengers: Endgame going off with the Guardians of the Galaxy, so it would make sense they would appear in the movie, but don’t expect their screentime in the actual movie to proportional to their screentime in the trailer no matter how fun the Peter and Thor dynamic is. It is a Thor movie after all. We’ll have to wait until May 5, 2023, to properly catch up with the Guardians.
No Gorr: We already know Christian Bale has been cast as the main villain Gorr the God Butcher and while we got a super quick glimpse of Russell Crowe’s Zeus it doesn’t appear like Gorr made an appearance. Perhaps he was hiding in plain sight, but more likely they are saving his reveal for the next teaser which will probably come out after Dr. Strange 2.
…or Loki: This one is kind of a given as even though he has been in the last 3 Thor movies Loki is considered dead to both Thor and the MCU at large despite a pre-endgame variant running around in the Disney Plus Loki series. We could probably expect an end credits scene bringing back Loki and setting up Loki season 2
…But there are goats: After being pitched as far back as the first Thor movie we finally get to see Thor’s mythological goats: Toothgnasher(Tanngrisnir) and Toothgrinder(Tanngnjóstr,) pulling an Asgardian boat away from New Asgard with possibly Valkyrie as their passenger
Jane foster is back…as Thor?: For those of us who have been following the production of both Thor 4 and the more recent comics, we already know Jane Foster is going to appear as a female version of Thor, but it was still a welcome surprise to see her appear at the very end of the trailer wielding what is either a repaired Mjolnir or a very close replica. The hammer did appear to have quite a few cracks in it, so perhaps Jane had it reforged so she can join her former lover on adventures or take up his mantle now that he appears to be on the verge of retirement.
Those are just a few observations about the new Thor trailer. What do you think? What easter eggs did you spot? Let us know in the comments
