Calm Down, December 2021

This has been a pretty intense few weeks for nerds! I don’t even know where to start, it’s bonkers almost anywhere you can stream something. Disney is kicking down your door with some entertainment, whether you’re ready or not with what seems like a lineup fueled by the kind of energy only vengeance can provide. First, in a nod to comic book purists and people who believe Die Hard is a Christmas movie, Hawkeye is shaping up to be more than just exciting exposition and new loose ends. It has its hardcore references to the source material while delivering the theory sparking twists and “oh shit!” cliffhangers are that we tune in for. Ever since Hollywood figured out that ending and continuing films the way soap operas do is the magic formula. I know Hawkeye began in November, but it’s Christmas-themed and them Disney + shows really start to pick up in episode three anyway.

Oooh speaking of Marvel, Spider-Man is out and I’m still super excited to see this. I know the three Spider-Men memes has been the worst kept secret in pop culture for a year now, but I don’t care. It’s like if you found out you were getting a surprise party and a few of your friends saw you and you saw a stripper get in a cake, but they insist there will be no party. It’s still gonna be cool even if the surprise isn’t surprising. Mind you, I don’t have inside knowledge, it’s just been really obvious. Either way, it looks like it’s going to be everything I hoped for, either way.

Netflix dropped more Shaman King for those who are following the remake. It’s animated beautifully and most of the original voice cast has returned. One gripe I had with season one was the ADHD fever dream pacing. Season two seems to improve on that a bit, but I’m only a few episodes in. December is kicking my ass with things I like!

Jojo PART F’N SIX dropped. Netflix released twelve episodes of probably the weirdest chapter in the series at once, as is their custom. David Productions is killing it again animating Hirohiko Araki’s art and the voice cast is perfect. I’m just not used to getting so much at once. It’s never been this way with Jojo, even back in the manga only days. Willfully rationing episodes has been difficult. I have four left. Luckily…

..we toss yet another coin to our favorite Witcher as season 2 of The Witcher comes out on the 17th. This means much more than help in staving off a Jojo binge. If you’ve seen The Witcher, you’re in the same boat as me. If you haven’t seen it and you like medieval fantasy, go watch it! Henry Cavill, Anya Chalotra and Joey Batey eat every scene like potheads on a 2 a.m. TacoBell run. I love this show.

I have to admit, I got a bit overwhelmed and started to re-watch Scrubs on Prime Video. I wanted to make an analogy for this but it’s literally like going to a restaurant and seeing too many things you like on the menu and responding by pulling the rest of your chicken sandwich from lunch out of your pocket. It’s a weird way to react, but Scrubs is a good show!

Either way, there’s more to watch than there is December to watch it in. I just gotta get caught up when I can. February brings Sandman and I get to play that Arceus: Breath of the Pokémon that’s coming out.
