Lara Croft: Original Game History

Lara Croft is one of the most recognizable characters in computer games. Even those who are not into video games have heard of her. The Tomb Raider franchise has spawned three full-length feature films, comic books, and a variety of merchandise – from Barbie dolls, copying the heroine’s appearance to bigger dolls for the older “kids”. In 2021 the game series about the tomb raider and a brave archaeologist named Lara Croft celebrates 25 years. Therefore, we decided to tell you more about beloved archaeologists.

Tomb Raider

In 1996 Lara was created by only 6 developers from Core Design. It’s a bit angular and with only a few polygons – it was enough to conquer the player’s hearts. Tomb Raider became one of the founders of the genre of third-person shooters, which then became equal to many popular today’s franchises.

Attractive character is not the only thing the developers were able to surprise. Besides Lara, the game had a lot of interesting things – an abundance of cut-scenes, which were woven into the exciting story, changing the camera position to create a cinematic effect, when the dynamic action with chases and gunfights was replaced by intricate puzzles.

Tomb Raider II: The Dagger of Xian

Developers were in a rush to bring new Lara on the shelves by Christmas of 1997. So it took only 8 months to develop. And it was another success! The game sold over 8 million copies, which is very solid by the standards of those times. Despite the frantic pace, this part was solid and didn’t look hastily made.

Looking almost the same as the first part, a new adventure gave to Lara some new features: The heroine is now able to shoot underwater. And she got a driver’s license so now she got a snowmobile to ride on.

Tomb Raider III: Adventures of Lara Croft

The game was released in 1998. The Lost Artifact supplement was released in 2000. This part brings some new trials to Lara: swamps and quicksand in which you can die, hard-coded weather conditions, ceiling ladders, sprinting, roll after sprinting, and crouching.

Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation

Released in 1999. In this part, Lara can use ropes hanging from the ceiling to climb over gaps and chasms, climb vertical poles, round corners, and climb along ledges. For the first time, Lara gets real use of her driver’s license driving through the Egipt sands on her Land Rover (Midficated version of Range Rover) that you can try for yourself by renting Range Rover Vogue in Dubai. Lara also chose this car on her trip to Thailand in the first movie.

The 3D model of the heroine added movable parts at the junction of the limbs, so it looks more elaborate and realistic. The possibility to return to the previous levels was added, as some of them can be passed by different routes and in a non-linear order.

The end of the game was a little shocking for the fans of the series: this time Lara didn’t have time to get out from under the wreckage, being buried alive.

Tomb Raider: Chronicles

The game was released in 2000. The friends, who have gathered for a symbolic funeral to consecrate the empty coffin on Lara Croft’s grave, indulge in memories of her adventures.

The game brings new abilities to Lara such as contact combat with accompanying maneuvers, as well as the ability to stun the enemy by sneaking behind his back.

Conclusion

Perhaps on such a note, we should end the history of the original game, which forever changed the world of computer entertainment. Tomb Raider did not demonstrate a technological breakthrough, but it was made with soul, and that is why it managed to give unforgettable impressions. That is why the adventures of Lara Croft, consisting of only one hundred polygons, are still relevant.
