Thank the Gods it’s October! It’s times for crisp, cool air, sweaters and apple cider. Forget pumpkin spice though I can’t wait to carve a jack ‘o lantern. As my kids and I plan and make our Halloween costumes, we will sit and watch movies together. The following movies are at the top of our lists to watch. Some are for nostalgic reason, some are for absolute fun and others are because we love them so much. Here we go…
Nightmare Before Christmas is a classic. It stars Jack Skellington (Chris Sarandon) as the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town. He is bored doing the same thing year after year. He goes looking for something and stumbles onto Christmas. Jack embraces Christmas wholeheartedly and it just comes out wrong. Funny. But wrong.
Hocus Pocus is probably the best kids Halloween movie in the world. It features the Sanderson Sisters, Winifred (Bette Midler), Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Mary (Kathy Najimy) who were bound for eternity unless a virgin lit the black flame candle. Well he did and Max (Omri Katz), Dani (Thora Birch) and Allison (Vinessa Shaw) but defeat the sisters with the help of Thankery Binx (Sean Murray) before they drink all of the kids in town.
Scary Godmother: Halloween Spooktacular and Scary Godmother: The Revenge Of Jimmy are just simply too cute. The Scary Godmother is “scary” because she’s a witch rather than the traditional fairy. She is a real hoot and hangs with some weird characters. Hannah, wants to go trick or treating and her cousin doesn’t want to be bothered with her. Scary Godmother takes her to her place on the Fright Side and they have an incredible Halloween Party. In the second one, Scary Godmother: The Revenge Of Jimmy, Hannah must stop Jimmy from erasing Halloween.
Casper is a wonderful movie. I grew up on his cartoons. It lets you know how Casper came to be Casper. The movie introduces us to Kat (Christina Ricci) and her dad Dr. Harvey (Bill Pullman) who move into Casper’s mansion to rid the premises of ghosts on the orders of Carrigan (Cathy Moriarty) and her sniveling henchman Dibs (Eric Idle). Kat moves so much and has no friends. Casper is a ghost and has no friends. They make the perfect pair.
The whole Halloweentown series which includes Halloweentown and Halloweentown 2: Kalabar’s Revenge as well as Halloween High and Return To Halloween Town. The world of Halloweentown was dreamed up and brought to life by Disney. They did a spectacular job. With four movies to to this series, it would be a lot to break down so just check it out. I promise, you won’t be disappointed.
Hotel Transylvania 1, Hotel Transylvania 2 and Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation. There is even a Hotel Transylvania 4 coming in December of 2021. Hotel Transylvania follows a human guy named Jonathan (Andy Samburg) that finds a hotel and finds Dracula (Adam Sandler) and his teenage daughter Mavis (Selena Gomez) and subsequently falls in love with her. They, Jonathan and Mavis have a son who is a human/vampire and name him Dennis. Dennis has no Vampire abilities. Dracula is heartbroken. Mavis and Jonathan want to raise Dennis in California. Dracula ends up falling for a descendant of Van Helsing, Erika, while they are on a cruise ship.
Addams Family and Addams Family Values is absolutely awesome. They are Halloween embodied, everyday. They are marriage goals and a loving family no matter what is thrown at them. They are hysterical and witty. I truly recommend these movies. I want to be Morticia Addams (Anjelica Huston) because she is just so perfect.
Scooby-Doo is great anytime. However because they are forever investigating hauntings, ghosts, ghouls and things that go bump in the night, any of the movies animated or not are perfect for a kid’s Halloween movie marathon. Piled high with snacks, the kids can be just like Scooby and Shaggy.
Goosebumps and Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween are based the book series Goosebumps by R. L. Stine. Jack Black plays R. L. Stine in the movies though R. L. Stine does make a cameo appearance as another character. The first Goosebumps movie introduces us to the magic that makes R. L. Stine’s books so good and exactly how far that magic can be taken. That same magic makes mischief in the second movie.
All of these movies are tried and true with my family except Monster House. Have you seen it? How was it? As for the rest of my list, did I miss anything beside It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown? Let me know in the comments below. Til next week…
